About the Item

This lacquer box by Hsien Min Wang features a chrysanthemum motif that captures the serene beauty of autumn. The box is shaped using the molded lacquer technique and finished with layered lacquer painting and polished maki-e. Petals overlap in radiant tones of gold, silver, and color pigments, creating a rich and luminous surface. The chrysanthemum, a symbol of purity and resilience long celebrated in classical art and poetry, is rendered in full bloom across the black lacquer ground, its vivid hues accentuated by the deep, mirror-like surface. Wang integrates modern lacquer painting with traditional maki-e, raised maki-e, and chinkin techniques to achieve both elegance and depth. The glossy black background enhances the brilliance of the flowers, evoking tranquility and refinement. Descended from a family of lacquer artists, Wang combines mastery of classical craftsmanship with contemporary sensibility, infusing new vitality into the aesthetics of traditional East Asian lacquer art.
