About the Item
For years, I’ve used small collages as a foundation for developing paintings. More recently, I’ve moved toward a hybrid approach that combines painting with collage. I’m drawn to how the edges of paper interact with the more fluid structure of paint—it creates subtle shifts and unexpected contrasts. I’m particularly excited by the interplay of positive and negative space, and how layering builds complexity and depth.
Collecting local plants has become a ritual. I return from walks with armfuls of natural materials, start printing, and let the process guide the painting. I'm fascinated by the tension and harmony between abstraction and representation. My work distills my experience of the landscape into something both intimate and expansive. Color harmony, structure, and the balance between warm and cool tones are central to my practice, but expression always takes precedence over perfection.
My work explores themes of transformation, connection, and how disparate elements come together to form something whole.
I’ve spent over 40 years in western Colorado, with more than half of that time in this valley. I've lived in remote places—farms, ranches, and open land—and each has shaped my perspective and artistic voice. I’ve continued to study throughout my life, taking many workshops at Anderson Ranch and completing a residency at the Santa Fe Art Institute. A formative experience was interning with Sheila Hicks in Paris, where I was immersed in artmaking and first began to understand the union of the serious and the playful.
Originally trained as a tapestry weaver, I shifted to painting in 1989. My paintings have been featured in House Beautiful, Santa Barbara Magazine, and Colorado Homes & Lifestyles. My tapestries have been exhibited at the former Aspen Art Museum and the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
Although I never set out to focus on botanical forms, the prints I make from collected plants have unexpectedly led my work in a completely new direction—one deeply rooted in place, process, and discovery.

Hunter's work is included in several corporate collections including Sterling Drug, Chugai-Upjohn, Ernst and Young, Satellite Health Care of Mountain View, Ca., and the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa. One of her tapestries was included in a show entitled “Significant Colorado Women Artists of the 20th Century” which traveled around the western region and also to the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. Using printed material from design magazines, I cut and arrange shapes to make studies for paintings. This process allows for experimentation with structure and color before beginning to paint. My work is about transformation and how things go together. Meaning and content develop with the brushwork, the energy, the relationship of colors and allowing the process to change and evolve. Structure, texture, and color harmony are integral to my work.
