About the Item
Ilmars Blumbergs (1943-2016)
Born into a family of servants. In 1963, he graduated from the Decorative Design Department of the Riga Applied Arts Secondary School, and in 1972, he graduated from the Painting Department of the Latvian Academy of Arts. In 1972, he studied scenography under the guidance of Gunārs Zemgals.
From 1969 to 1978, Blumbergs worked as a scenographer at the Daile Theatre, becoming its chief artist in 1976 (a position he held until 1985). He also collaborated with several other theatres in Riga, other Latvian cities, and abroad. He has participated in exhibitions since 1962. Several of his works have received various awards. He was one of the most notable representatives of innovative trends in Latvian scenography in the 1970s.
In 1972 he became a member of the Latvian Artists' Union, in 1973 - a member of the Latvian Theatre Workers' Union. In 1989 he received the honorary title of Meritorious Artist of the Latvian SSR. In 1995 Blumbergs was awarded the Order of the Three Stars, fourth class. In 2009 he received the Gamers' Night Award for lifetime achievement.
His wife was actress Marīna Janaus, and a documentary film "Ilmārs and Marina" (directed by Daila Rotbaha) was made about the couple in 1989.
