A black and white collage by James Verbicky. Composed of a variety of materials that create an eclectic and thought provoking artwork.
James Verbicky (b. 1973) is a contemporary painter and mixed media artist who lived the majority of his early life in British Columbia before immigrating to the United States in the early 2000s. He struggled with legal status for many years before finally being awarded the ‘Extraordinary Ability’ Green card due to his extensive involvement with a wide range of museums, galleries, publications, nonprofit organizations, and philanthropic endeavors. In 2008, his work was selected for a 110 year-old juried exhibition at the Louvre with the Societie Nationale des Beaux-Arts.
Shortly after his exhibition in Paris, James found inspiration among the magazine vendors along the Seine, Verbicky at which point he began creating media paintings. These complex and sculptural mixed media artworks became his vessels for communicating about a society oversaturated by media. By utilizing rare historical content, including both obsolete and persisting brands and advertisements, as well as vintage graphics, Verbicky has constructed a large oeuvre of densely layered and unique compositions that ensnare the viewer by engaging the natural human proclivity to find order in chaos, to sort and assign meaning as a way to navigate the world. In this process, he transforms the images and messages he appropriates into themes of love, kindness, and peace.
In 2014, Verbicky returned to paint on canvas with the ERA and Bhavanga series, which allowed him to transcend the barriers of paper collage with bands of hand-painted canvas, enamel script, classical imagery and crystallina. At his core, Verbicky is a visual language manipulator, unsatisfied with deconstruction alone, he is driven forward by the process of reconstruction and the creation of a new, abstract visual language. In 2018, he expanded his vision further by venturing into the world of three-dimensional monumental sculptural works, which build out into the environment and create a sensory experience beyond sight alone.

James Verbicky
Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada from Polish descent, James Verbicky lived the majority of his early life between Victoria and Vancouver, British Columbia. As an adult, Verbicky moved to the U.S., and after struggling with legitimacy for many years, was awarded the rarely bestowed ''Extraordinary Ability'' green card from the U.S. government due to his extensive involvement with a myriad of museums, galleries, charity organizations, and publications across America. In 2008, his work was selected for a 110 year-old juried exhibition at the Louvre, in Paris, France, with the Societie Nationale des Beaux-Arts. In 2010, Verbicky debuted the media paintings, mixed media works that stimulate the viewer with both content and texture. The three dimensional surfaces transcend traditional painting and venture into the realm of sculpture, and by utilizing vintage media and graphics, advertisements, and obsolete branding materials, Verbicky presents us with the result of decades of attempts to persuade, manipulate, and coerce through subtle and suggestive imagery. His works are at once deeply conceptual and hauntingly beautiful and abstract, capturing both forgotten and persisting icons of media and reminding us that we are constantly being influenced. Verbicky original works are counted in thousands of important private, public, celebrity and museum collections in countries all over the world. He collaborates frequently with philanthropic organizations, using his artwork to raise thousands for nonprofits like the Waterkeeper Alliance and the Art of Elysium. His works have been the focus of international exhibitions, from Berlin, to New York City, to Boston, Los Angeles, and San Diego, and have been auctioned by Sothebys & Christie''s.

This work is sourced directly from the artist.
Butterflies cut from International Currency and gold foil, arranged in the shape of a target, and pinned with stainless steel entomology pins to canvas. Framed in a white, wooden frame.
About Charles Patrick
Charles Patrick is best known for his intricately cut paper butterflies, suspended like museum specimens on individual entomology pins and clustered together to form icons, logos, and symbols against the backdrop of pristine canvases.
Living in a world between the paper and digital ages, these works conjure feelings of nostalgia for the tactility of paper, created from vintage comic books, children’s books, currency, maps, and other obsolete ephemera. This stands in jarring contrast to the clean, pixelated designs that the butterflies form which exchange individual emotion for the universal immediacy of today’s contemporary visual language. Targets, hearts, ohms, and stars pop from the canvas in three-dimension - a fresh departure from the flat screens that are the norm today.
With a background in vintage poster restoration, illustration, and printmaking, Charles Patrick combines his love of paper, art history, and design to create works that are both strikingly beautiful and poignantly thought-provoking.

Taher Jaoui (b.1978) is a French Neo-Abstract Expressionist painter, who was born in Tunisia and currently works in Germany. Jaoui graduated from the world-renowned Sorbonne University in Paris in 2007, where he studied Mathematics and Engineering. This education continues to inform Jaoui’s compositions which blend formulas and calculations with abstract forms and colors. Along with his personal experiences, Jaoui’s inspiration comes from many sources, including abstract expressionism, cartoons, graffiti, street art, and primitivism.
Jaoui’s work mixes painting and drawing in ways that are both abstract and figurative. His colorful compositions stimulate the viewers’ feelings and imagination, allowing them to build their own interpretations. Without any formal art education, his artistic practice is influenced by African art, graffiti, glitch art, the COBRA art movement, as well as the philosophy and attitude of post-war abstract expressionism...
