About the Item
Open Heart, 2015, Gouache and Collage on Japanese Paper, 25 x 18 1/2 Inches.
Jean Feinberg is a NY based artist whose works on paper (handmade paper, gouache, and collage) are closely linked to her unique constructions of paint on wood, some of the wood being 'found' and enhanced by the artist's geometry, others of painted plywood to which geometric forms are layered. What sets Feinberg apart is her extraordinary sense of color, placement, and scale, and a quirky approach to materials which elevates the mundane and makes of it something highly personal, surprisingly elegant, and formal.
Artist’s Statement:
“My work is abstract and non-objective, characterized by a sparse sense of geometry and a lush, rich, and complex color. My love of the Hudson Valley with its particular light and color has had a profound effect on my life and work. Landscape light and weather, place and incidental moment, joy and wonder in color and color mixing/seeing are my ongoing inspiration.
Though the term constructions may best describe what I do, I consider the works more related to painting than sculpture because of the frontal orientation meant to be seen on the wall, and the importance of color and color relationships. My interest in the intersection between painting and object, with work that calls attention to its physicality, has been an ongoing characteristic of my work throughout my painting life.
In the current work, the salvaged wood is often origin and/or counterpoint to the color interventions, which stand clearly defined in opaque, matte, and uninflected paint application. Color notations or the use of found color in the form of paint chips or colored papers have become a foundational part of my working process despite the fact that the decisions about color are intuitive.”
Jean Feinberg began exhibiting her work in NY in Soho in the 1970s as an invited artist at the women’s gallery A.I.R. and at the then new Mary Boone Gallery. She has since been included in many solo and group shows at the National Academy Museum, the Weatherspoon Art Gallery, the Milwaukee Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Princeton Museum of Art, Angles Gallery in California, Stefan Stux Gallery, the Jersey City Museum, Galeria Durban in Venezuela, and the John Davis Gallery. She has been represented for over 20 years by the Beth Urdang Gallery in Boston.
Feinberg is the recipient of grants, fellowships, and residencies from the National Endowment for the Arts, Yaddo, the MacDowell Colony, and the Edward Albee Foundation. Works are represented in public and private collections in the US and Europe including the Weatherspoon Art Gallery, Parasol Press, Werner Kramarsky, Best Products, IBM Corporation, Amerata-Hess, and Champion International.
Reviews of her exhibitions have appeared Art in America, Artforum, Arts, Art International, ArtNews, The New York Times, and The Boston Globe among others.
The artist holds a BS in Fine Arts from Skidmore College and an MA in Painting from Hunter College. She is currently an Assistant Professor in Fine Arts at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.

Jean Feinberg
Jean Feinberg is an American abstract painter who uses paint, wood, canvas and paper to explore the intersection of painting and object. Using salvaged wood, she constructs paintings that incorporate sculptural qualities, blurring the lines between 2D and 3D representation. She lives and works in New York City.
Feinberg works with a variety of techniques and mediums, including painting, paper collage and installation. The majority of her work incorporates the application of paint, gesso, canvas and other mediums to found and salvaged wood. Her process results in abstract paintings, sometimes called constructions, which utilize geometric abstraction and lush, dramatic color patterns to explore relationships between color, material and space.
The work defies objective reference points, instead evoking meditative qualities and facilitating emotional explorations. Feinberg gains inspiration from her environment, in particular, the interplay of light and color in the Hudson Valley in upstate New York. She is also guided in her color choices and compositional decisions by wood, paint chips and other found materials she incorporates into her constructions.
Inspired by notions of landscape, nature, time, space and feeling, Feinberg's abstract constructions communicate feelings about the partnership of human-made materialism with more transcendent elements of nature.

Pink Study, 1960s Abstract Mixed Media Painting Pink & Blue, Mid-Century Modern
By Hilaire Hiler
Located in Denver, CO
This original vintage 1960 abstract painting by Hilaire Hiler (1898-1966) showcases the artist's structuralist style, created in the mid-20th century while Hiler was based in New Mexico. Signed lower right, this striking piece is painted in soothing tones of pink and blue, capturing the essence of Hiler’s unique modernist approach. The framed dimensions measure 15 ½ x 18 ¾ inches, with the image size measuring 14 x 17 ½ inches.
About the Artist:
Hilaire Hiler was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, and raised in Providence, Rhode Island, where he began his art education at the Rhode Island School of Design. His artistic journey led him to study at several prestigious institutions, including the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Pennsylvania School of Industrial Art, Wharton School of Finance and Commerce, and the University of Paris in 1919.
In Paris, from 1919-1934, Hiler supported himself as a jazz musician and pianist for The Jockey Club, all while immersing himself in the European art scene. After returning to the U.S. in 1934, Hiler made San Francisco his home, where he was commissioned by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) to paint murals in the Aquatic Park...

Alexandra Rutsch Brock, Seeing Breathing, 2020, gouache, thread, 8 x 15 in
By Alexandra Rutsch Brock
Located in Darien, CT
These new small-scale paintings were created using gouache on handmade paper. Alexandra Rutsch Brock then “drew” with a sewing machine using various colored threads. Using the thread as a painted line, playing with the marks and motifs the machine allows that creates contrast in both surface and color. They are sewn directly with no preliminary sketches, just instinctive gesture, sometimes in a similar color to enhance a texture, other times contrasting as a new element. The entangled threads that dangle down emphasize the materiality. Working so closely to the surface, she is aware of the senses of seeing, breathing, touching and feeling……………escaping into these new surfaces.
Alexandra Rutsch Brock has exhibited in solo and group shows most recently at The Keck School at USC, CA, The Painting Center, NY, Village West Gallery, NJ and Misericordia University, PA.
Her work has been featured in Studio Visit Magazine SV Vol44. Her recent co-curations include “HyperAccumulators” with Elizabeth Saperstein at Pelham Art Center, NY and “Among Friends” project with artists Patricia Fabricant and Beth Dary...
