About the Item
Joan Snyder's early 1970s period is known as the best of her career, now an iconic period of time for feminist abstract painting of the era. This fully finished work on paper reads like a small painting, as she utilized both acrylic paint, which drips down the surface, as well as gouache and graphite to anchor the piece. It comes out of her "stroke" series, her breakthrough series which resembles musical notation. Snyder once said, "I wanted to tell a story and I wanted there to be different sections. I wanted a beginning, middle, and end, many different parts, happy, sad, tragic parts, many things happening at once, different instruments, different sounds, rhythms." Paintings from this series can be found in the most prominent museums in the world, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Tate.

For more than sixty years, Mernet Larsen has been making paintings that tell stories, showing sharp-edged, mysterious characters in a strange world full of tension and clever humor. She uses different ways to show space that sometimes don't match up. By mixing different perspectives, like reversed and traditional views, she turns everyday situations into a dizzying version of reality that feels familiar yet strange. Her influences come from many places, including geometric shapes from Russian Constructivism, Japanese Bunraku...
