About the Item
'Were We Ever Really Children?' is a rare early example of the small-scale assemblages that American artist Joel Jaeks began producing in the 1980s. As with all of his assemblages, the artwork is constructed inside an envelope-sized paper board box – then filled with what can only be called memories, ideas and fading dreams: 'Were We Ever Really Children?' has inscribed on the back wall the lyrics to the song 'What's Made Milwaukee Famous,' written by Glenn Sutton and released as a country single by Jerry Lee Lewis in 1968. In front of the song, intentionally obscuring it, is a branch covered in paper tape and white paint, mimicking the appearance of snow. The snow motif is carried throughout the rest of the box, which is painted white and covered in subtle snow-like glitter.

American artist Joel Jaecks (b. 1958) began his college career as a watercolor artist in the early 1980s after graduating from UWM with a bachelor’s degree in drawing and painting. These watercolors achieved notoriety through exhibitions and a strong collector base in the 1980s.
"While houses and the foliage around them are the objects my camera records," he said, "the subjects of my paintings are the photographs themselves. What appears to be reality in my paintings is not necessarily what is true to life, but what is true to the photograph." Joel Jaecks was spellbound by the abstraction of reality recorded by the camera. Painting from photographs, he highlighted the same nuances he notices in mechanical recordings: the flattening of three-dimensional images, exaggerated angles, the changed intensity of colors. After studying the photograph of an object caught in a peculiar light, Jaecks would paint the scene in great watercolor detail. This detail, expanded to the large scale of his paintings, compels the viewer to look beyond the simple play of shadows.
In the time since, he has moved on to focus on his assemblages, which are themselves inspired by the work of Jasper Johns. “I did my first one in 1982,” he said. “I used to send mail art to my friends. They were flat pieces of paper with paintings or collages on them. After a while I started making them three-dimensional and I guess I haven’t stopped.”
To make them, he uses mat board to build them. He paints the backs of the boxes, glues the sides together, and then fills the space within with ideas, dreams and memories. “The inside of the box usually begins with a photo,” he said. “It might be my own photo or a photo from a book, but it’s usually an image that I start with. I’ll glue it in and then I might let it sit for a few weeks until I find something else to add.” He uses found objects in his work — puzzle pieces, screws, credit cards, paint samples, an image from a cereal box. He also incorporates text, either from books or song lyrics. “I want my work to be more than the objects I find, or lyrics from a song,” he explained. “When I put it all together, I want it to become a piece of art.” Jaecks also includes string and bamboo sticks in his work to make the boxes kinetic, more dynamic. In some, elements are mounted on strings and can be slid up and down. “People seem to really respond to things that move so I like to incorporate things that hang or spin,” Jaecks said. He elicited the passing of time in a dream-like piece that features an old photo and clock that spin.
He continues to live and work in Milwaukee and is a teaching assistant at Fernwood Montessori School.

As with all of his assemblages, the artwork is constructed inside an envelope-sized paper board box – then filled with what can only be called memories, ideas and fading dreams. 'Scratch The Earth, Let The Telephone Ring' is covered on the exterior and interior by splatters of blue and red paint, applied with the same vigor as the Abstract Expressionist canvases of Jackson Pollock. On the back, four squares cut from a screenprint of a winter landscape form a window to the themes on the inside: pasted on the back, a Victorian postcard...

Chapel, 1948-2021, Artist's Statement:
“I was raised on the Western Slope of Colorado, with almost unfettered access to the American wilderness. I currently reside on a sailboat in Oakland, CA with my studio in nearby San Leandro. I work with permanent materials including bronze, steel, stainless steel, aluminum, glass and stone. It is my contention that a work of art must include a complete environment, not just a single object. In my opinion, it is very difficult to convey meaning with either pure abstraction, or pure representation. Describing an abstract concept with another abstraction does not define the subject.
There is nothing in a completely non-objective artwork from the viewers experience upon which to base some meaning. One the other hand, a completely realistic presentation doesn't define an abstraction any better than a dictionary. This is why my sculpture is a blend - the symbolic joining of modern man with primitive experience.
They are in-depth studies of the archetypes and symbols used to communicate their relevance to our everyday lives. Mythology, poetry and art are humanity's attempt to describe the mysteries of life which are beyond our ability to consciously comprehend. This is the appeal of the visual arts, poetry, literature and music; they excite an emotional response, or memory that transcends mere words.” - Ron Chapel...

Alain Kleinmann is a true master in capturing the time flow within beautiful painting and installations. his unique approach to art is both sensorial and conceptual, expressed through complex pieces that feature high historical content and extremely rich textures. By mixing different techniques such as drawing, collage, writing and engraving, kleinmann is able to subtly evoke tactile emotions and memories from the past. His paintings are like sculptures and his sculptures have a certain pictorial feel, obtained through special treatments and polishing processes. The metamorphosis of the years, memories that fade away, life experiences forgotten and somehow re-discovered, traditions and cults shape the art of kleinmann and his symbolism, which touch the visitors deeply in their souls.
