Muted pastel tones and textured layers create a soothing abstract composition. Book pages, a barcode, and a music sheet add nostalgia and character. This visually quiet piece uses simple colors and shapes to evoke a gentle sense of harmony.
About the Artist
Artist Joey Korom paints abstract expressionist pieces and has been a practicing artist for 50 years. "I make art that is purely optical—art meant to engage the eye and the mind of the viewer without employing any associations outside of the work itself," says Joey. His educational and professional background in architecture inspires him and informs his current visual arts practice. The use of line, shape, and proportion in Joey’s work is visibly influenced by his work experience, but he avoids the rigidity involved in structural draftsmanship. He focuses instead on underlying structure, seductive color, and loose brushwork. Joey sees his style as a personal liberation from the demands of architectural drawing, and yet, he never lost the disciplines he was taught. He works from his home studio, a clean and organized space, and listens to classical or jazz music. He stores his finished works in an adjacent room—a three-seasoned porch that holds up to sixty pieces at a time. Outside of painting, Joey is an architectural photographer, writer, and architectural historian.

Joey Korom
Joey Korom was born in Milwaukee in the summer of 1955. He is an Abstract Expressionist painter who has been a practicing artist for 50 years. Korom went on to earn a bachelor of science degree in 1989 from the School of Architecture, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and in 1992, he obtained a master of architecture degree. He experiments with media, colors and textures to produce purely optical artwork, that is, artwork meant to engage the viewer, visually and emotionally, without employing any associations outside of the work itself. Korom is passionate about this expressive type of abstraction, an artistic mode that escapes the rules of perspective and realism. His educational and professional background is in architecture, which he considers to be the father of all arts. The use of line, shape and proportion in Korom’s work is visibly influenced by his experience as an architect, but he seeks to avoid the rigidity involved in architectural draftsmanship. He focuses instead on underlying structure, seductive color and loose brushwork. Korom sees his style as a personal liberation from the demands of architectural drawing and yet, he’s never lost the disciplines he was taught.

Artist Diana Elena Chelaru depicts three expressionist female figures in a wavy dance. Their flowing dresses burst into a joyous explosion of blue flowers. She achieves a unique consistency through dripped and dried enamel paint layered with acrylics. Diana patterns fine pointillism details for more playful elements.
About the Artist
Artist Diana Chelaru paints colorful expressionist interpretations of human emotion. “Art is a means of communication, it is how I express my thoughts, hopes, regrets, and joys,†says Diana. She experiments with working on large-scale paintings using the visual language of form, lines, and color to create compositions that exist only in her imagination. Growing up in Romania, she draws inspiration from Byzantine mosaics as well as Gustav Klimt’s subject matter and use of decorative patterns. She received her BFA in Painting from George Enescu Art University and finished her MA in Art History from Queens College. Diana simply goes with the flow rather than dwelling on the formulaic process. It all depends on how and what she feels at the moment. She indulges in music while she creates her work.

Artist Patrick O'Boyle produces an abstract aerial view of a landscape. "I use aerial photos taken from various places I have traveled," says Patrick. He creates an organic shape filled with colors, lines, and patterns. The structures fill the canvas forming a new and larger image, open to the interpretation of the viewer.
About the Artist
Patrick O'Boyle primarily paints in a studio, rarely using reference material other than his own thoughts and dreams. He always paints in a series of five - at the end of the fifth painting he revisits and reworks all of them until he feels they're complete. Using extra-long handles on his brushes, Patrick paints at a distance from the canvas so he can see the works evolve as a whole from the one color he starts with to the vibrant array at the end.
