About the Item
Artist Comments
Urban shadows and jumbled street scenes inspire this painting, capturing the energy of Dearborn Street in Chicago’s Loop. With a limited color palette, dark gray replaces black. Strong shapes and feathered edges enhance the composition. The piece is framed in hand-crafted oak hardwood, with a 0.25-inch front view and a depth of 2 inches.
About the Artist
Artist Joey Korom’s background in art and architecture provided the foundation for his non-representational painting. For decades, the language of abstract expressionism has played a prominent role in his work. His paintings often feature large color fields with “torn†edges, rough textures, and generous impasto. Collage elements also contribute significantly to the overall composition. Joey earned a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and is an accomplished artist, architect, photographer, and published author. He works from his home studio, a clean and organized space, and listens to classical or jazz music. He stores his finished works in an adjacent room—a three-seasoned porch that holds up to sixty pieces at a time.

Joey Korom
Joey Korom was born in Milwaukee in the summer of 1955. He is an Abstract Expressionist painter who has been a practicing artist for 50 years. Korom went on to earn a bachelor of science degree in 1989 from the School of Architecture, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and in 1992, he obtained a master of architecture degree. He experiments with media, colors and textures to produce purely optical artwork, that is, artwork meant to engage the viewer, visually and emotionally, without employing any associations outside of the work itself. Korom is passionate about this expressive type of abstraction, an artistic mode that escapes the rules of perspective and realism. His educational and professional background is in architecture, which he considers to be the father of all arts. The use of line, shape and proportion in Korom’s work is visibly influenced by his experience as an architect, but he seeks to avoid the rigidity involved in architectural draftsmanship. He focuses instead on underlying structure, seductive color and loose brushwork. Korom sees his style as a personal liberation from the demands of architectural drawing and yet, he’s never lost the disciplines he was taught.
