About the Item

John Dean Monroe Harvey (1895-1978) Design for Great Marlborough St, London W1 (1954) by Stone Toms & Partners Gouache on paper 43 x 51 cm Signed and dated ‘J D M Harvey 54′ and inscribed ‘Stone Toms & Partners Architects’. A very fine architectural perspective by Harvey for this site adjacent to Liberty’s on Regent Street, London. Harvey is arguably unrivalled as an architectural perspectivist working into the latter half of the twentieth century. He trained as an architect but, after the war, worked almost solely on drawing architectural perspectives for other architects. Lawrence Wright wrote that The architectural draughtsman who is equally competent at drawing such incidentals [as landscape and figures] is as rare as the landscape or figure painter who is equally competent at architecture. Harvey was one of those rare men. He would draw a building with a slightly freer hand than an architect would, and his landscape in a slightly more architectural manner than that of a painter' (Wright, 'Perspective in Perspective', Routledge 1983, p234); Harvey's works illustrate his skill at combining architectural observation and design with incidental details. The figures at ground level, combined with the various open windows, turn the Modernist building design into a lively set complete with its own original characters. Harvey was born in Newfoundland, where his father was a railway engineer, and came to England aged 17, studying at St Paul’s School, London and at the School of Architecture, University College London 1914-1918. In 1920 he went into practice on his own, designing several interiors with J A Bowden. Amongst his works were the reconstruction and interior decoration of 4 Cleveland Place, London (1936-37), and a house – including all furnishings – in Herne Hill for Dr M I Elliot (1938). After 1944 he primarily worked as a perspective artist and illustrator, a role to which he was particularly well suited. During the war he was a member of St Paul’s Watch, a group of over one hundred architects, surveyors, and artists who kept watch over St Paul’s Cathedral during the blitz, extinguishing fires and helping St Paul’s to survive the war virtually unscathed. The Watch was notably described as the ‘best dining club in London’ on account of its influential members. Harvey retired to Italy, living on the shore of Lake Como and enjoying the local red wine.

In 2020, amidst the lockdown's intensity, my art journey ignited professionally. With ample time to delve deep, I explored figurative painting and abstract drawings until early 2022. I created a different series of paintings, one standout series, "Black, Bold, and Beautiful," celebrated the radiant essence of black women through six vibrant portraits clad in Ankara suits. While one found a home with a collector in Tel Aviv, the rest lingered in my studio. Two years on, a spark ignites within me to revisit this series, infusing it with the evolved narrative that aligns and fits into the conversation my works now engage in as a Contemporary Gospeller. The notions of “Restoration and restitution” weigh heavily in my heart, reflecting on personal and global scales. While global discourse focuses on returning stolen artefacts from Africa back to their origins, my perspective delves deeper into the restoration of lost time and purpose. My point of view on Restoration and Restitution is from this notion that man can lose years of his life in futility, and when the time of profit comes, it occurs mostly at the brink of life. A profound scripture, "I'll restore the years that the locust has eaten," resonates deeply, offering a beacon of hope amidst perceived futility. When I read this verse, it distinctly jumped out at me. Wow! Years can be restored! There is hope! To make this revisiting more contextual, I look out for material which can be regarded as “used-up”, “less-value”, or “wasted” - then it appears to me that Jute sack fits into this context! The Jute sack stands for the lost years of glory, having exchanged hands from one country to another before ending up in my studio to take a new life, different from what it has been used for. Thus, the series finds renewal through the symbolism of jute bags...
