Payday Black Friday Friday has long held cultural resonance in our unrelenting, consumerist society. It's arrival has been consistently been celebrated as we honor the arrival of the hallowed weekend and its unspoken yet acknowledged prompt to shop, imbibe or indulge in other forms of the ritual of consumption. Enter Queens-based artist Juan Hinojosa ( @juan_hinojosa_ ) and his virtual solo exhibition, "The American Treasure Map," which will continue to unfold on Fridays over the next two months. A timely investigation of our culture's insatiable work ethic and drive to buy, own and conquer, Hinojosa employs the medium of collage to fashion elements from his colorful collection of found objects into thought-provoking compositions. What he deems a sense of "play" at work in the studio actually translates to outspoken statements condemning harmful LGBTQ stereotypes and retail therapy run amuck while also expressing relatable desires for true love, wellness, and yes, eye candy. Artist Statement: As the first-born child of two Peruvian immigrants it was easy to become obsessed with American culture. This led to my obsession with collecting every found object I could get my hands on. Using found objects as tools to play with in the studio has changed the way I look at my own trash and the trash around me. As a "green artist," I have a responsibility to reduce my waste and the waste in my community and I accomplish this by turning discarded items into art. Similar to many people in America, I am conflicted by consumerism, and my art works are a result of my own bad habits, desires, and classic American greed.
