About the Item

On a Spanish Motif, 1956 – 1973, mixed media collage and painting on thick canvas, signed and dated lower right, 38 ½ x 26 inches, signed verso, labeled verso includes title, artist's name, address and size of work, presented in its original strip frame Justin Faivre was a California-based painter and multi-media artist. Born in Matthews, Indiana, Faivre moved with his family to Portland, Oregon, where he studied at the Portland Art Gallery and with Howard Ellis. By 1915, local newspapers reported on Faivre’s early artistic success while still a junior high school student at the Clinton-Kelly School. By 1923, Faivre relocated to Los Angeles, and worked as a freelance commercial artist. He later moved to Northern California, where he eventually settled in Oakland. During the 1930s and 1940s, Faivre principally worked in oils and watercolors depicting the American Scene. By the 1950s when Faivre created the present work, his practice became more abstract, as he explored multi-media assemblages. He exhibited at the Oakland Art Museum, DeYoung Museum, California State Fair, the Alameda Art Association (prizes), Society of Western Artists, Oceanside Museum of Art, and the Legion of Honor. His works are in the collections of the Monterey Museum of Art and he is listed in Who was Who in American Art and other standard references.
