"This series of works features large archival photo transparencies of urban vistas. These images are encased in clear acrylic panels, enhanced with fluorescent or LED lighting, and mounted with stainless steel hardware. The monumental columns of the expressway stand in stark contrast to the surrounding weeds and discarded debris, evoking the tension between industrial infrastructure and the neglected urban landscape. The acrylic panels themselves take on an ethereal quality, reminiscent of the lacy, drippy forms of graffiti often seen on bus shelter panels or windows, adding an element of fragility and transience to the piece."
About the Artist:
Sculptor Karen Brown's use of mixed media reflects the complex relationship between the urban and industrial landscapes that surround us. Artist Commentary:
Years ago while on a hunt for compositions to photograph, I came across a splattered wall. I was in an industrial area in northeast Los Angeles and driving through an alley behind some warehouses. I stopped in front of a wall that had tar running down from a roof that had undergone some repairs. The tar patterns reminded me of art by Joan Mitchell or Jackson Pollock. I took several photographs of the wall concentrating on the more gestural sections. Inspired by those photos, I created "The Tar Pits...

This diptych started several years ago during a public art performance called Nike's Advice. I painted 130 feet of unprimed canvas with the public. It was scary! I don't consider myself a painter. I was having to accept Nike's Advice myself ... as in "Just Do It". Later, I used my sewing machine to stitch decorative lines. Gold-leaf was added before the surface was coated in UV filtering epoxy. The works are mounted with copper roofing nails to a stretcher bar with gold painted sides.
