THE WAY 4 - Mixed Media Painting On Jute Canvas, Abstract Artwork, Large Format

2012

About the Item

„The Way #4”, mixed media (soil, pearl glue, oil, powder pigment, rosin) on jute, 140 x 170, 2012 Series “The Way” by Marta Pokojowczyk contains mixed media paintings on jute created between 2011 and 2012. Canvases were a part of the diploma concept on the Academy of Fine Art and Design in Wrocław, entitled "The Possibility of an Island". "The Way" do not show any concrete journey but rather represents a state of being. The horizontal line expresses continuity and in the same time it shows an interval, a border dividing surface. Works can function as individual pieces or they can create larger composition where the place of each painting can be different each time. Series “The Way” iniciated a performative aspect of the discipline of Painting in which an experimental and multistage process of creation is as important as the final piece. To create these raw canvases I had ripped coffee jute sacks and sewed them again on a sewing machine. What intrests me the most is the "adventurous" surface of jute and its vulgar matter, tiny imperfections. Some parts of canvases are left with the original prints fom South America which are a part of the design of each painting. Series “The Way” juxtaposes in itself pairs of contradictions, harmony and chaos, peace and upcoming storm, continuity and interval, aestethics and vulgarity, lightness and weight. What’s more, the form of a sack, so interesting in its shape and function, is a prototype of the further woven art works - Canvases 3D. Marta Pokojowczyk born in 1985 in Wrocław, Poland, graduated Art History at the University of Wroclaw and Painting at the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Art and Design in Wroclaw. In 2014/2015 attended a transboundary program Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs in 'Helena Loermans Handwoven Textiles’ Atelier in Odemira, Portugal. Entering the discipline of weaving is the crucial point in artist’s practice which let the author to deepen the issue of the canvas as a groundwork (basis for painting). Designing 3-dimensional textile objects which interweave fine and applied arts is a transposition of the artpiece from a sphere of a pure view directly into the human environment. In 2017 Marta set up Interweave Studio - Atelier where art interlaces with craft and humanities. She is artistically connected with Wroclaw, Suprasl (Podlaskie Voivodeship) and Odemira. Scholarship holder of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland (2019). "My work principally consists of deeply abstracted figure compositions--intuitive constructions that begin with random marks establishing larger masses of torsos, heads, and limbs in an undefined setting. The emphasis is almost purely on intuition. The figures are born of their surrounding environment, emerging only partially and fugitively from the layers of pigment. A narrative is evident but never overt. A crown, a shield, a boat, a wheel. Though the subject has recently coalesced around my reading of Dante and Shakespeare, the settings remain extremely vague- a beach, an interior, a woodland. The paintings are, in the end, meditations on the relationship between the protagonists in a wordless drama. In my paintings, I use a cold wax medium combined with dry pigments, oil paint, and embedded fragments of burlap. The surfaces eventually build up into a dense, rugged terrain." --Thaddeus Radell

Large Colorful Abstract Expressionist Oil Painting Modernist Beach Landscape
By Ralph Rosenborg
Located in Surfside, FL
Ralph Rosenborg (American, 1913-1992) "American Landscape, Sky and Shore, 1973" Oil on canvas. Signed 'Rosenborg' (lower right). Titled (verso). 30 x 40 in Ralph Rosenborg (1913–1992) was an American artist whose paintings were described as both expressionist and abstract and who was a colleague of the New York Abstract Expressionists in the 1940s and 1950s. Unlike them, however, he preferred to make small works and tended to explicitly draw upon natural forms and figures for his abstract subjects. Called a "highly personal artist," he developed a unique style that was considered to be both mystical and magic. His career was exceptionally long, covering more than 50 years. Rosenborg was born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 9, 1913. In 1929, while he was a high school student, he began to work with the designer, artist, and instructor, Henriette Reiss. When Rosenborg encountered her, Reiss was serving as an instructor for the School Art League in the American Museum of Natural History. She was then engaged in instructing both students and their teachers in the city school system by a method she called Rhythmic Design. She believed inspiration for abstract designs could be found in rhythms—rhythms that could be perceived in ordinary perceptions much as they are when listening to music. In May 1930 Reiss selected a drawing by Rosenborg to be shown in an exhibition of creative design by City high school students. From 1930 to 1933, aged 17 to 20, Rosenborg studied with Reiss in what Vivien Raynor of the New York Times called a "pupil-apprentice" relationship. During this time she instructed him in music appreciation, literature, and art history as well as giving technical training in art. In April 1934 Rosenborg was one of 1,500 artists to participate in the annual Salons of America exhibition, which was held that year in Rockefeller Center RCA Building. Each paid two dollars for the privilege of hanging up to three works and none was given prominence over the others. The New York Times reported that by the time the show closed a month later, some 30,000 people had viewed it. The following year he was given a solo exhibition (his first) at the Lounge Gallery of the Eighth Street Playhouse. The year after that he participated in a group show held by the Municipal Art Committee and in 1937 was given a second solo exhibition, this time in the Artists Gallery. That year he also became a founding member of and participated in a group show held by American Abstract Artists, a loose assembly of artists that aimed to promote abstract art and artists in New York. Its founders included Josef Albers, Ilya Bolotowsky, Werner Drewes, Ibram Lassaw, Mercedes Matter, Louis Schanker, Vaclav Vytlacil and Rudolph Weisenborn. At roughly the same time Rosenborg associated himself with a group of abstractionists that called itself "The Ten" (It included Ben-Zion, Mark Rothko, Adolph Gottlieb and Joe Solman) and in May 1938 joined with its other members in what would be his first appearance in a commercial gallery: the Gallery Georgette Passedoit. In 1938 he his work appeared in a group show at the Lounge Gallery, in 1939 in group shows at the Artists Gallery and at the Bonestell Gallery with David Burliuk, Earl Kerkam, Karl Knaths and Jean Liberte...

Abstract Mixed Media Collage Oil Painting Sports, Leather Baseball Mitts
By Patrick LoCicero
Located in Surfside, FL
Title: (Baseball) Mits 25.5" W x 25.5" H x 2.25" framed; canvas measures 24" W x 24" H. Provenance: The Rails Collection, Washington, DC (with their label verso) This depicts floating baseball gloves inn an abstract pattern. This is not signed on the front and might be signed verso. We have not examined out of frame. Patrick LoCicero was born in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1959. He attended Youngstown State University, Ohio, and the Columbus College of Art and Design. He completed a B.F.A. at Ohio State University in 1982 and an M.F.A. at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1986. His paintings, installations, prints, and multimedia work have been shown in California, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. LoCicero's richly layered imagery is characterized by unusual juxtapositions of everyday objects and classical motifs, which play with the viewer's perception of materials and subjects. LoCicero’s assemblage paintings combine collage with painting. The overlap and collage elements relate directly to the images he depicts, guiding him in his choice of subjects, and come from a variety of sources including the Kama Sutra, antique children’s books, letters and journals. His still life paintings resonate due to the contrast the artist sets up between the collaged surface and the painted surface, as well as the play between the actual shallow space and implied deep space. Patrick specializes in creating mixed-media collages that tell stories. Collage paintings inventively reinterpret the collage technique that developed during the Cubist Dada era, and he reinvigorates one of the most important modes of expression in the art of the 20th Century.
