About the Item

Shuttleworth's work is noted for her use of traffic cones and other found materials. Lana describes her work as representing the "common ground aspirations for diverse societies by depicting idealized landscapes transforming cross-cultural bi-products into works of art. Across the global commons, once diverse landscapes and the societies they support are synchronizing with the ideology of progress in plastic consumption. Plastics are nature-transformed from ancient life remains buried deep beneath the foot of our cultural landscape. Born into service to progress, recovered water bottles, x-ray film and safety cones bear the evidence of life from existing in the world today. Cut, carved and nailed, the surface of these landscapes are assembled with thousands of slivers of plastic and nailed with thousands of brad nails constructing a series of impressionistic mosaics of color intricately laid to create imagery conducive to a return to nature." Raised in the southeast, Shuttleworth received her BFA from Florida State University and has exhibited throughout southern California including at the Hammer, Barndall, Gallery 825/LAAA, and the Barrett Gallery at Santa Monica College. Her work has been reviewed in the LA Times, Coagula, and ArtScene among others. Her studio is in Downtown Los Angeles.

After Sunset
By Francis DiFronzo
Located in Fairfield, CT
Born in San Pedro, California in 1969, Francis DiFronzo has been painting and exhibiting his artwork in the United States for more than thirty years. "I discovered at a young age that art had the ability to transport me out of my world and into the lives of artists I admired. When I looked at paintings by Andrew Wyeth or Edward Hopper, I felt as though I was momentarily living in the worlds they created. I wanted to do the same thing. I wanted my work to have that power." After receiving his B.F.A in 1994 from California State University, Fullerton, DiFronzo moved to Philadelphia, PA where he continued his studies in drawing and painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. There he worked and learned under the guidance of artists Murray Dessner, Jan Baltzell, Sidney Goodman, Vincent Desiderio and Irving Petlin...

An Emptiness I Needed to Know
By Eric Hesse
Located in Fairfield, CT
Hesse describes of his work, "encaustic is the perfect paint with which to explore this balance between control and chaos. In trying to wrestle a recognizable image from a fluid and often incorrigible medium, a tension emerges, echoing the drama outside the window." Choosing to focus on the Los Angeles landscape, for Hesse, "the act of building is generally considered synonymous with growth and progress. In the cities I’ve called home, construction more often seems the imposition of one will upon another. Visually, the result is a sort of competition; angles wedge their way into vegetation and undaunted, the foliage always pushes back. All it takes is a look out of an airplane window...
