About the Item
Artwork dimensions (without frame): 60h x 40w inches
During World War II an the Vietnam War, women were encouraged to volunteer to travel to war zones through the Red Cross. They would become waitresses, serving coffee and donuts from mobile service clubs to soldiers in an effort to improve morale and remind the soldiers of home. In order to be selected, applicants had to embody the ideal American woman, meeting standards that far exceeded those of the military. "Applicants had to be college graduates, at least 25 years of age, have stellar reference letters, pass physical examinations and have an outstanding personality as demonstrated at personal interviews." This piece examines the history of the objectification of women by hybridizing the tradition of the county fair and the Donut Dolly, using the absurdity of the carnival to point to pervasive irrationality, particularly in times of heightened conflict.
