About the Item

Linda Friedman Schmidt is a self-taught, German-born American artist best known for the emotional narrative portraits she creates from discarded clothing. She was born in a displaced persons camp and was the first-born to Holocaust survivors who discouraged her interest in art. Her thought-provoking portraits are fearless explorations of identity, personal history, and emotion, and have been exhibited in group shows at the American Folk Art Museum in New York City, Allentown Art Museum in Pennsylvania, and Morris Museum in New Jersey, among others. Internationally, her work has been exhibited in the UK, Japan, Portugal, and Argentina. Friedman Schmidt’s work has also been selected for exhibition by prestigious curators Judy Chicago, Faith Ringgold, Anne Umland, and numerous others. Her art has been reviewed by Hyperallergic and featured in Textiel Plus, Living Artists, and Interlocutor Magazine, among others. She has been published in “The Art of Mothering: Our Lives in Colour and Shadow,” which will be released in the fall of 2022, “Fiberarts Design Book 7,” “Contemporary Hooked Art: Themes and Memories,” “Not Normal: Art in the Age of Trump,” and various other publications.” In 2022, Friedman Schmidt’s work was exhibited at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum, Gallery Aferro, and was featured at the Koehnline Museum of Art and Cummings Art Gallery at Connecticut College in October.

"Heads Will Roll" Textile Fiber Art, Discarded Clothing This piece is unique, signed on recto and verso, and includes a certificate of authenticity Linda Friedman Schmidt is a German-born American artist known for her emotional narrative portraits created from discarded clothing. She was born stateless in a displaced persons camp, the first child of Holocaust survivors who discouraged her interest in art. Her artwork depicts a reality informed by social, political, and feminist issues as well as a traumatic family history. Through a process of unmaking and remaking, she explores the potential of art to mend, transform, and heal the self and society. Her earlier artworks continue to endure today as they address inequality, violence against women, and the general sense of unease and vulnerability that has been heightened by the pandemic. Her artwork has been exhibited extensively in the USA in group shows at venues such as the American Folk Art Museum, Allentown Art Museum, Montclair Art Museum, Morris Museum, and many others. It has been selected for exhibition by prestigious curators such as Judy Chicago, Faith Ringgold, and renowned art critic Donald Kuspit. Her work has been shown internationally in Japan...
