About the Item
'Mirror 45' 2021 by Seattle based abstract painter, Liz Tran. Mixed media on panel, 30 x 40 in. Tran's ‘Mirror’ series, is heavily influenced by her history with Rorschach inkblot tests taken during her youth. Here, a mirror image is formed by folding the painted paper. She then continues to work by hand. Composed of ink, acrylic, graphite, Chinese calligraphy paper, and beeswax, the kaleidoscopic motifs seem to pulsate and vibrate across the canvas, creating a vivacious, active surface. In bold colors of red, orange, yellow, blue, green, purple, pink, white, and black on a beige background.
Tran has developed a singular visual language based upon diverse influences, including dream imagery, imagined landscapes, geodes, outer space and The Big Bang. The artist’s body of work is an attempt to counteract the darkness in the world with optimism and joy. In aesthetic terms, Tran’s phantasmagoric visual style incorporates components from 1960’s Psychedelic Art and Pop Art.
Liz Tran is a graduate in Print Art and Painting from Cornish College of the Arts and exhibits both nationally and internationally. Public collections of Tran's work include the Seattle's Portable Works Collection, The El Paso Children's Hospital and The Child Center. She has been awarded multiple fellowships and grants; including the Clowes Fellowship for residency at the Vermont Studio Center, the Nellie Cornish Scholarship and residency at CAMAC, Jentel, Millay Colony for the Arts, and The Center for Contemporary Printmaking. Tran resides in Seattle, WA.
