Sea Winds, 3rd quarter 20th century, mixed media on board, signed lower left, 16 x 20 inches, signed, titled, media and price noted in pencil verso, exhibited Visual Art Show, Southern Vermont Art Center, Manchester Vermont, June 4 - June 19, 1988 (noted in pencil verso) Lucy Doane was a New England artist who is best known for her swirling magical landscapes, such as Sea Winds. She was born in Nahant, Massachusetts on December 22, 1908, and graduated from Lynn Classical High School in 1925. Doane then earned a B.S. degree at the Massachusetts College of Art in 1929 and her MFA from Columbia University. She also studied art at the Netherlands Institute of History and Art. Early in her career, she worked as an illustrator of children’s books. After teaching art for several years at Keene Teachers' College in New Hampshire, Doane became director of art in the public schools in Rutland, Vermont, before retiring in 1971. She then lived in Bennington, Vermont where she was an active member of the Bennington Area Acts Council, the Southern Vermont Arts Center, and the Bennington Museum. In 1991, she became a fellow of the Vermont Academy of Arts and Sciences for her "outstanding contribution to the cultural resources of the state." Doane’s art was exhibited widely in New England and New York, including at the Museum of Modern Art. Her works are in the collections of the National Gallery of Art, Museum of Modern Art, and the Bennington Museum.
