About the Item

Dimensions: 30 x 30 cm, framed size 44 x 44 cm, float mounted and framed in a dark wood frame. In his mixed media works on paper Luke Elwes captures the transient nature of place and memory. His Waterline paintings explore his chosen territory of Landemere. Close to the Stour estuary where Constable worked, it is similarly flat under an East Anglian sky. He captures the elemental flow of life on the tidal margins of the Essex backwaters, using the elements themselves, combining coloured pigments with estuarine silt and inks washed with rain and salt water. ‘They are executed under an open sky, at dawn or dusk, sometimes in the rain or late at night, and they remain close to the ground or the water, where the shifting light radiates across the salt marshes and the tides move back and forth through the delicate maze of creeks and channels. They are a fragile record of process and time, the uncertain result of a particular moment of elemental engagement, made without correction, at one sitting. The location provides just a beginning, a way of collecting particles of colour and light and a way of observing the play of prevailing conditions on a paper surface, which, once it is scattered with incidental markings and stained with coloured inks and organic matter, is then allowed to become saturated by the surrounding waters’. Luke Elwes was born in 1961. He studied at Camberwell School of Art and Bristol University between 1980 and 1985, and London University (MA 2007). Recent shows include: Adam Gallery, London 2017; Galleria Ceribelli, Bergamo 2017; Palazzo Lanfranchi, Pisa 2016; National Trust at Flatford Mill, Suffolk 2016; Clifford Chance, London 2015; Minories, Colchester 2014; Young Museum, Salisbury 2013; North House Gallery, Essex 2012; Estorick Collection, London 2010; Galerie Marceau Bastille, Paris 2009; Kettles Yard, Cambridge 2008; Bury Art Gallery, Manchester 2007. Luke Elwes has also written on painting for a number of print & online publications and in 2011 was invited to give an ‘Artist’s Eye’ talk at the National Gallery. He was awarded residency grants at the Vermont Studio Center (2013) as well as the Josef Albers Foundation (2015) in the USA.
