About the Item

Maggie laporte Banks Tyger Tyger, Burning Bright. Original Contemporary Painting Acrylic and raw pigment from india on art board. Size: H 40cm x W 50cm x D 0.50cm. Sold Unframed Insitu images are purely an indication of how a piece may look. This painting was developed from sketches made during a trip to the Nagarahole tiger reserve, Jungle retreat Wayanad, Thirunelli. A calm Beautiful environment with trees ,flowers, and tigers . Then later developed into a larger work, in my Devon studio. Maggie LaPorte Banks artist comments: “My Art is routed in landscape, influenced by childhood memories of Donegal, by Lough Swilly, surrounded by dark mountains. I spent ten years living near to the Brecons Beacons and painting using a tent as a studio in all seasons. For over thirteen years I was an artist in residence in a cottage on the end of Cape Cornwall overlooking the Brisons at different times of the year. Therefore, I have a vast amount of passion for the skies, sea and mountains which I love to involve within my paintings. My recent works have been developed from these roots and are becoming much more abstract, focusing on ‘the essence of place’ through the colours I use and emotions I have created. I work mainly in oils, acrylic and mixed media, sometimes adding unique materials such as sand, carborundum, iron fillings and many other products I feel the work dictates.

The Planets Are Aligning, Abstract Painting
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
Artist Margriet Hogue demonstrates celestial alignment through collaged printed papers and tissues. She decorates each planet with unique stencils. Patterns over patterns layer the piece strikingly. The bold contrasts bring the experimental piece a distinguished flare.

About the Artist
Artist Margriet Hogue creates layered mixed media paintings inspired by "the contours of the land, the distressed surfaces and the colors of the different seasons," as she explains. Born in the Netherlands, Margriet's family moved to Venezuela when she was 6 months old, and then immigrated to Canada when she was in middle school. As a child, her mother taught her various fiber crafts. Buying her first loom allowed Margriet to pay her way through college, and after graduating, she spent years producing textiles and clothing. Unfortunately, the dust from weaving aggravated her child's asthma, so she started a needlework business called The Essamplaire (old French for sampler). "Whenever we would be on holidays I'd make appointments with museums to see their sampler collections and would request licensing agreements to reproduce them in the form of needlework kits," explains Margriet. "Samplers were part of a girl’s education from the 1500s to the early 1900s and consisted of them stitching alphabets, pictorial images and quaint verses." In 2014, Margriet attended an acrylic painting workshop, which she describes as very freeing after the fine and detailed work involved in needlework. Today, when she's not painting, she enjoys road trips through the mountains to the west coast, visiting family who live far and wide, and continuing to oversee her needlework business.
