Makama John
Deep Contemplation

2023

About the Item

Deep Contemplation is an original painting by Makama John. John created Deep Contemplation with Charcoal, Oil, and Acrylic on a 30W by 30H inches primed canvas. Deep Contemplation is an artwork that depicts a woman staring with a sense of intense introspection. This piece is not only visually striking, but it also provokes deep thought and contemplation in the viewer. First and foremost, the subject matter of this piece is a woman. It is refreshing to see women represented in artwork, particularly in a way that is not objectifying or sexualized. This woman is not posed in a seductive manner or shown as a mere object for the male gaze. Instead, she is shown as a human being with her own thoughts and emotions. Furthermore, the way the woman is staring is powerful. Her gaze is piercing and seems to penetrate the viewer's soul. It is clear that she is not simply looking at something, but rather she is deep in thought and contemplation. This sense of introspection is something that is often lacking in our fast-paced, technology-driven society. We are rarely given the time or space to truly reflect on our lives and our place in the world. This artwork reminds us of the importance of taking a step back and examining our own thoughts and emotions. However, I believe that simplicity is what makes it so powerful. Sometimes, the most profound messages are conveyed through simplicity. In a world where we are bombarded with information and stimuli at every turn, this artwork is a breath of fresh air. Moreover, the title of the artwork, "Deep Contemplation," perfectly encapsulates the essence of the piece. It is not trying to be overly complex or mysterious. It is simply a depiction of a woman deep in thought. The title serves as a reminder that sometimes the most important work we can do is the work we do on ourselves. In conclusion, Deep Contemplation is an artwork that should be celebrated for its simplicity, power, and message. It reminds us of the importance of introspection and taking the time to truly reflect on our own thoughts and emotions. We need more artwork like this that celebrates the beauty and complexity of the human experience without resorting to objectification or superficiality. My dreams are unimaginable They scare me Maybe because I have set so many bars for myself that were unrealistic. I am fully aware of my environment and how I have struggled to bring my dreams to reality, the thought of it is mentally tasking and exhausting. Well, should I stop dreaming? Maybe just maybe it has become an escape mechanism to run from this reality. My reality is not friendly, it isn't a place I want to be. But maybe, just maybe my fantasies will be a domain for my dwelling soon. So I keep my eyes shut and let my imagination take me to those places I haven't been to yet. So I keep dreaming. • Shadows and Diamonds
    Located in Ibadan, Oyo
At the heart of "Shadows and Diamonds," we encounter the theme of shadows. John ingeniously uses shadows to represent the obscured aspects of our individuality, the parts of ourselves that are hidden from the outside world. These shadows can be seen as the unexplored depths of our personality, our fears, or our secrets. The young man in the artwork seems to embrace his shadows, suggesting a willingness to acknowledge and confront those hidden aspects of his being. By portraying shadows as an integral part of the artwork, John challenges us to embrace our own shadows and accept them as essential components of our identity. The shadows in "Shadows and Diamonds" serve as reminders that the multifaceted nature of human existence is not limited to what is visible on the surface but extends far beyond, into the realm of the intangible and the mysterious. While shadows represent the hidden aspects of self, diamonds in the artwork symbolize the facets that shine through, the qualities and characteristics that we choose to reveal to the world. Diamonds are known for their brilliance and sparkle, and in "Shadows and Diamonds," they represent the positive attributes that we proudly display to others. They symbolize our achievements, our talents, and the qualities that make us unique and valuable. Through the juxtaposition of shadows and diamonds, John invites us to reflect on the delicate balance between revealing and concealing different aspects of our identity. The young man's beaded necklace, adorned with diamonds, suggests a celebration of self-discovery and the courage to embrace and showcase the diverse elements that constitute our true selves. In addition to the symbolism present within the artwork, Makama John...
