About the Item

Artist: Manuel Bea Cervera (Barcelona, 1934 – Switzerland, 1997) Technique: Mixed media on paper Dimensions: 34 x 52 cm (13.4 x 20.5 in) Framed dimensions: 46 x 63 cm (18.1 x 24.8 in) Support: Paper mounted on cardboard, framed Estimated date: 1970s (signed “74”) Signature: Signed in the upper right corner with the monogram “MB” DESCRIPTION In this untitled work, Manuel Bea unfolds his distinctive symbolic, biomorphic, and dreamlike universe through a refined and lyrical graphic language. Against a hazy background of earthy tones and bluish greys, floating forms emerge—tubular, filamentous, or almost calligraphic—that subtly connect through a play of tensions, lines, and visual balance. The composition suggests an internal and ambiguous narrative, halfway between the biological and the abstract, as if it were a secret script or a microscopic theatre of primordial forms. The linear elements and chromatic accents (reds, blacks, and whites) bring a compositional rhythm reminiscent of surrealist automatism and visualized psychic structures. The vertical figure in the center acts as a symbolic axis or spine of the scene, imbuing it with an almost ritualistic verticality. ARTIST BIOGRAPHY Manuel Bea Cervera (Barcelona, 1934 – Switzerland, 1997), also known as Manuel Cervera Bea, was a visual artist and printmaker whose career evolved from figurative drawing toward a symbolic abstraction influenced by surrealism, art informel, and experimental graphic language. He began his career as an illustrator in Barcelona and, after training in Zurich, developed a highly personal visual language closely linked to organic forms, automatism, and the synthesis of textures and signs. For over three decades, he resided in Castell d’Aro, from where he produced a prolific body of work that gained international recognition. He participated in events such as the São Paulo Biennial, the Salón de Mayo in Barcelona, and exhibitions in prestigious European galleries. His work is part of public collections such as the Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art, various contemporary art museums in Spain, and the Museum des Landes Glarus in Switzerland. RELATED ARTISTS Manuel Bea's work can be aesthetically and conceptually linked to figures such as: Joan Miró – for the musicality of line, symbolic economy, and atmospheric backgrounds Matta – for the spatial suggestion and interplay of biomorphic forms evoking inner universes Wols – in the nervous, calligraphic treatment of the line Jean Arp – for the presence of the organic within an abstract context Antoni Tàpies (early periods) – for the use of textures and the poetic, non-literal dimension of visual elements
