About the Item

With his unmistakable version of contemporary Surrealism, both comical and otherworldly, Marcel Dzama is one of Canada's most internationally successful artists. Born in Winnipeg in 1974, Dzama began exhibiting internationally only a year after graduating from the University of Manitoba. Early champions of his work included Jim Carrey and Nicholas Cage. Dzama's works are instantly recognizable for their subject and style. He draws as much from the visual language of folk art as he does from art history. His images possess an eerie familiarity, often evoking the feeling of leafing through a child's picture book and stoping to randomly examine a page. This work is classically Dzama. In the mid 90's, after a mishap with some root-beer, Dzama began using root-beer concentrate to create his rich brown hues. This piece features a scene between two characters: a smirking woman and an anthropomorphized bear. As always with Dzama, the picture is ambiguous at best, as though he is showing is the middle of a scene. While Bear’s grip is strong, the gaze shared between the two figures is one of shared mischief; the bear and woman are co-conspirators of a scheme that only they are aware of. Dzama's work can be found in a host of prestigious public and private collections including Paris' Centre Georges Pompidou, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the MoMA, Le Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. He is particularly favored by celebrity collectors including Brad Pitt, Jim Carrey and Steve Martin. Questions about this artwork? Contact us.
