About the Item
This is a one of a kind luxurious sculpted leather mirror by Marie Barthès.
A long oval mirror is encased in copper on top of gray-brown leather, embroidered with silver and gold copper wire, hot-burnished with hot foil, stamped forms, and gold leaf, and finished with a zipper that runs all the way around the leather.
Marie Barthès is a Paris-based artist who specializes in leather sculptures. Her sculptures are hybrids of art and function with their characteristic mirrored elements, intricate copper wire embroidery, and skillful leatherwork. Barthès finds inspiration in the tactile beauty of leather and its potential to be both smooth and rough. She employs a variety of techniques such as hot gilding, carving, sewing, and embossing to highlight this material juxtaposition.
Barthès’ world is inspired by reality, contemplation, and observation. She interprets rhythms from nature, represents order and disorder, draws creativity from particles and cells so that each parcel of life is reflected in her works.
