Living in temples and the countryside with craftsman communities in Japan for over a decade, Majio was deeply influenced aesthetically and by the content of Japanese culture. Her craft apprenticeships and Zen practice in Kyoto was steeped in traditional practices where spirit was not separate from matter. This animistic base is seen throughout her work. From Majio’s visual journal: Hill Town is marked and scratched into a painted-rust surface with attached cardboard and netting. The buttery gold in contrast helps the image emerge from the materials as place. Paradoxically the place is not material but rather an environment frequented in my dreams. His work ranges from non-representational painting focusing on diverse mark-making and color theory to conceptual sculpture and assemblage using historical and found objects. This is an 3-part painting / construction (assemblage) created from acrylic paint, wood, glass, and found objects. It includes several historic photograph of figures as well as many scenes from Black African American cultural history. Each piece measures 23" x 7.75" x 2.5", and they can be hung close together or far apart, depending on the buyer's preference.
