Michael Wedge
Amber, Original Painting

2023

About the Item

Artist Comments
Four figures gather around a campfire in a dark forest. One tends to a large pot while the others carry a taxi cab. They are extracting color from the vehicle. The scene reflects artist Michael Wedge's fascination with the contrast between city and country life and draws inspiration from his hobby of making maple syrup. Michael made the piece with a mix of oil and acrylic paint.

About the Artist
Artist Michael Wedge paints engaging surrealist images that play on the contrast between urban lifestyles and rural settings. “My work is the product of my interest and curiosity in how the viewer sees or relates to their environment,” says Michael. Time, perception, and emotion also enter his work as he draws fascination from humans and their relationship to technology and nature. Drawing and painting for as long as he can remember, his family encouraged and supported him to pursue his artistic ambitions. Michael developed his style that relies strongly on the media employed in its construction to build a visual language that remains guided by the content. “I believe that reality is more than what we can see, hear, and touch,” shares Michael. He works at a small studio space in his home that offers natural light, allowing him to evaluate colors accordingly. Photography and digital collaging take part in his process of creating intuitive references to whimsical and enigmatic narratives. In addition to his successful career as a fine artist, Michael shares his craft as an art teacher to 400 awesome little kids at a nearby public school. He revels in woodworking and enjoys anything to do with a frisbee. The Black Radish Studio at the Village Gate in Rochester hosted his first solo exhibition.

The world that I live in is uncertain, unstable, but I have to keep going and find something that can comfort me. This work is talking about the uncomfortable moment, but hopeful future, at the same time. This piece is made by layering Korean mulberry paper on a wooden panel with homemade flour glue. Then I apply a glue base. Next, I draw my sketch, and trace it on the paper. Then I paint three or four layers of a background color using pigments and glue base. Lastly, I paint the animal subject in fine detail, which takes most of time. The painting is on a cradled wood panel with finished edges. It comes ready to hang.

About the Artist
Heejin has been been drawing for as long as she can remember. She grew up with a serious illness and spent much of her childhood in the hospital. Drawing served as an outlet for her, bringing her peace and distraction. Heejin says there was no doubt as she grew up that she wanted to be an artist. She studied oriental painting extensively as a college student in South Korea and then went on to study art therapy in graduate school.
