About the Item

Monica DeSalvo’s “We didn’t take the plane—the plane took us!” is a lively 30 x 22 inch surreal collage on paper. Abstract areas of lime green, red, royal blue, and deep yellow embed items such as space machinery and a lemon rind. The collage is built on a digital enlargement of acrylic monotype remnants created with a Gelli plate, and the surface is embellished with pastel, colored pencil and marker. The square 18 x 18 inch composition sits in the middle of the paper creating a large white border at the top and bottom. The title is a joyful quote from DeSalvo’s late father and is written below the image with the signature. Monica DeSalvo is a Boston-based mixed-media artist and designer with a BFA in Visual Design from the University of Massachusetts. Her work has been featured in juried and invitational exhibitions and publications such as Suboart, Juniper Rag, and Artscope magazines. In 2024, she participated in her first artist residency at the Kolaj Institute in Sanquhar, Scotland. Her 2023 solo show, A Bus Tour in the Woods: Visual Duets with Her Father, was held at the Hopkinton Center for the Arts, and she was interviewed for the Dementia Spring Foundation’s Artist Spotlight. Monica lives and works in Arlington, MA. She is represented by Fountain Street Gallery based in Boston.
