About the Item
Monica DeSalvo’s “What about the numbers?” is a 48 x 24 inch surreal collage built on a digital enlargement of collaged monotype fragments and a black and white xerox on watercolor paper. Dense cascading abstract imagery with dark blue, rust, pink, red, and a stark white angular form gives way to expanses of white and the xerox anchoring the work. Images nestled within include denim, fire, wings, and calendar numbers. Other elements include remnants of vintage ledger paper from DeSalvo’s late father’s engineering profession and her own monotypes printed with a Gelli plate on these surfaces.
The work is hinge-mounted with linen tape, allowing the paper to naturally rest on the 1.5 inch deep wood panel. A simple pine frame with 2.5 x 0.25 inch slats extends 0.75 inches beyond the artwork. The title and signature are written below the image.
Monica DeSalvo is a Boston-based mixed-media artist and designer. She received her BFA in Visual Design from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. Her work has been shown in many shows both juried and invitational and is a part of collections across the US and Europe. She is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston.
