About the Item

This hand-painted round portrait, part of the ongoing Exchange Currencies series by Moldovan artist Natasha Lelenco, explores themes of psychological resilience, identity, and the symbolic construction of value. Rendered in rich blue and maroon hues against a vibrant red backdrop, the anonymous figure appears marked by coded symbols and high-contrast textures. The inscribed French phrase — Nous, les étrangers, nous vivons toujours au bord d’un effondrement mental (“We foreigners, we always live on the edge of a mental collapse”) — offers a stark reflection on the emotional toll of displacement and the persistent condition of foreignness. This piece was created on a 26 cm diameter, 2 cm thick wood panel using acrylic and mixed media. It belongs to a series of autonomous circular portraits that evoke the structure of currency, yet subvert the conventions of coinage by presenting invented faces rather than national symbols. These contemporary portrait coins function as allegorical tokens for identity, belonging, and the sociopolitical structures that assign differential value to human lives. The Currencies series, started in 2019 and continuing through 2024, invites collectors to see each work not only as a standalone piece, but also as part of a potential multi-panel installation—modular, evolving, and reflective of a larger community of othered selves. This work is part of the collection curated by Casa das Peritas, an independent contemporary art space based in Galicia, Spain, with a strong focus on poetic conceptual practices, identity politics, and curatorial care.
