About the Item

Circular contemporary portrait in acrylic on wood exploring identity, migration, and belonging through symbolic inscription and sculptural form. Currency #259 by Natasha Lelenco portrays the profile of an older woman, her face rendered in deep crimson tones against a warm ochre field. The figure’s sculptural silver hair and tranquil gaze evoke the dignity of classical portraiture, while the circular shape recalls ancient coinage. Around the edge, a Spanish phrase reads: “Aquí ya no soy extranjera, pero sigo sin ser de aquí.” (Here I am no longer a foreigner, but I am still not from here.) The inscription encapsulates the emotional paradox of migration—the tension between adaptation and estrangement. Executed in acrylic on a 26 cm wooden panel, the piece unites text-based art and figurative abstraction within a compact, installation-ready format. Its tactile surface and strong chromatic contrasts transform it into both a collectible wall piece and a conceptual object resonating with the Wunderkammer tradition of symbolic curiosities. Part of Lelenco’s ongoing Currencies project, a series of more than 200 original circular works, each piece functions as a metaphorical coin—a reflection on identity, mobility, and assigned value. Individually numbered and certified, each Currency carries an arbitrarily determined worth, subtly questioning how societies attribute human and cultural value. This gesture transforms each painting into a poetic commentary on exchange, origin, and time. These works are designed to be exhibited individually or as modular wall installations, adaptable to architectural and interior design contexts. Their scale and weight make them ideal for grid compositions or horizontal friezes in both residential and institutional settings. As a giftable art object and sculptural wall piece, Currency #259 exemplifies Lelenco’s fusion of fine art, concept, and craftsmanship.
