About the Item

This artwork, part of Natasha Lelenco's Currencies series, features a side profile of a man in gray tones against a bold magenta and red background, emulating the form of a coin. The inscription around the edge of the piece is in Russian and can be translated as, "It doesn't matter how long we are here. For them we will always be foreigners". This phrase reflects the involuntary nature of some migration experiences and the complexities of identity in a foreign land. The piece uses intense, vibrant colors and surrealistic portrayal of the man's profile to explore themes of identity, value, and the migrant experience. The Currencies series by Natasha Lelenco is designed for versatile display, working either as a standalone contemporary artwork or as part of a modular art installation, allowing collectors to create custom panel compositions that adapt to any space. Each piece is a unique hand-painted wood artwork, reflecting themes of migration, identity, and value. We offer special pricing for multiple acquisitions, and the artist also accepts custom commissions related to this series. For more details, feel free to contact the seller by clicking the "Ask the Seller" button—we respond in less than an hour! In this series, titled Currencies or Sorry, I'm not from here, Natasha Lelenco draws from her own experience to explore themes of foreignness and the feeling of 'not being from here.' This connects with the experiences of many who have faced the challenges of migration. Each piece, created on a circular wooden cut of 26 cm in diameter and 2 cm thick, emulates the shape of a coin. However, instead of depicting a king or national figure, these coins feature an anonymous face surrounded by a phrase that references circumstances, anecdotes, or linguistic confusions related to the migration phenomenon. These artworks are designed to function both individually and in multiple compositions, allowing for installations tailored to any space. As an artist of Moldovan origin, Lelenco delves into the theme of foreignness and examines the value of art with this series. Unlike conventional coins that have a fixed value and typically depict national figures, her coins showcase anonymous faces and offer variable, often arbitrary, selling values. These coins can stand alone or be combined with others from the series to create expansive installations. Lelenco also creates panels on commission according to clients' preferences. Feel free to get in touch for more information. As an interesting curiosity, the artist offers her collectors the possibility to exchange the equivalent value of the percentage that would have been due to the artist from the sale of these coins for future works of her own creation. Therefore, beyond acquiring a wonderful piece of art, they acquire the opportunity to visit the artist's studio and consider the purchase of another work using this as a form of payment.

Distorted Green Portrait with Erased Inscription. "Currency #230"
By Natasha Lelenco
Located in FISTERRA, ES
This circular green-toned portrait explores themes of exclusion, invisibility, and erasure within identity discourse. The facial features appear blurred, almost erased, dissolving into an ambiguous presence that resists clear representation. This visual distortion is mirrored by the inscription itself—scratched, overwritten, and rendered unreadable. The deliberate removal of legibility evokes the frustration of miscommunication and the social marginalization of those whose narratives remain silenced.
