About the Item

“Currency #198” presents a circular portrait of a woman in side profile, painted in luminous orange and ochre tones. Her headscarf, rendered with layered patterns and delicate highlights, radiates warmth against the vivid background. The surrounding inscription, written in Bambara—one of the most widely spoken languages in Mali—reads “N’Balimaw yo ne ye n’teriw ye,” meaning “I am happy and grateful.” This multilingual phrase transforms the portrait into an expression of joy and belonging, bridging visual art, language, and emotion. Part of Natasha Lelenco’s long-term Currencies series, the piece explores how cultural identity and human worth are inscribed within both personal and collective memory. Through the familiar form of a coin, Lelenco reimagines value as a human narrative rather than an economic one. Each circular panel becomes a symbolic object of exchange, celebrating diversity, resilience, and the universality of expression. Hand-painted in acrylic and spray paint on treated pine wood, varnished for protection and ready to hang, each “currency” may be displayed individually or combined with others from the series to create custom modular wall installations. For multiple acquisitions or custom compositions, collectors are encouraged to get in touch to receive special pricing and tailored installation guidance. We operate globally with the same attention and proximity extended to every collector. Each acquisition is handled with professionalism and care, ensuring full satisfaction throughout the process. As a small, specialist team with a deep commitment to art, we personally oversee the selection of every artist and piece, presenting a curated collection to an international audience from our corner of the Atlantic coast. "As an African-American artist in today’s world, I embody the vast differences found in our collective backgrounds. I view them as cultural assets. We are always self discovering and these self discoveries take us in surprising directions. We must gain strength from what we learn from each other as well as listen to that persistent, ever present, intuitive self. The connection of one’s own rich heritage and person growth will travel into the inevitable and critical connection between African Americans and Africa. These connections are rich and very important. They Exist! My work, I hope, will serve as a creative connection between the African diaspora and western culture. It is this connection that cause my creative forces to react." Janice Frame...
