About the Item

"Currency #216" by Natasha Lelenco features a vivid orange profile portrait of an anonymous figure rendered in acrylic on a 26 cm circular wooden panel. The figure is surrounded by the hand-painted inscription in Spanish: “Con un pie en el recuerdo y el otro aquí” (“With one foot in memory and the other here”). The composition draws attention to the psychological tension between past and present, a condition often experienced by migrants navigating between memory, belonging, and adaptation. The surface of the portrait is delicately inscribed with ornamental marks and linear traces, creating a subtle interplay between the interior and the exterior of the figure—between private narrative and public image. Executed with intense chromatic contrast and a flat, iconic format, the work belongs to the ongoing Currencies series, which reimagines the format of the coin as a platform to reflect on displacement, symbolic worth, and identity politics. Each piece in this series is assigned a variable price, not based on technical or material value, but determined arbitrarily as part of a conceptual exercise. This pricing gesture draws attention to the mechanisms of inequality through which lives are valued differently based on race, class, or nationality. The value written on the reverse of each coin is fixed and certified as a gesture of conceptual integrity. Works from the Currencies series can be displayed individually or assembled as part of larger site-responsive installations. Their compact, circular format and cohesive visual language make them ideal for grid-based or salon-style compositions. The artist currently has over 50 pieces in stock and accepts commissions for custom panel arrangements and institutional-scale installations. Collectors interested in acquiring several pieces or commissioning site-specific projects are welcome to contact us for more information and tailored offers. As a conceptual extension, the artist offers collectors the option to exchange the certified value of the artist’s share for future works. Although more than 200 pieces have been acquired to date, no collector has opted to exercise this possibility—though the invitation remains open. At Casa das Peritas Gallery, we operate globally with the same attention and proximity we extend to our local neighbors. We oversee every detail and guide you through the purchase process with the utmost professionalism, ensuring complete satisfaction for each client, whom we regard as valued members of our community. As a small, specialist gallery driven by a deep commitment to art, we carefully select every artist and artwork, presenting our curated collection to an international audience from our corner of the Galician coast. Read our clients’ testimonials and join the discerning collectors who trust our expertise.
