"Shining City" 51" x 75" inch by Neama El Sanhoury
Medium: fabric appliqué on linen
"Fragments of Time" series:
Ultimately, El Sanhoury’s work is contemplated and generated in a thoroughly modern constitution that appeals to and imparts upon our present-day conscience. When viewed up close Neama’s canvases are awash with an array of minutiae that keep our eyes in a constant state of engagement, even the visible stitch-work itself becomes an article of intrigue in its own right. When viewed from afar, they take on an entirely different quality, evolving into what the mind’s eye could conceivably interpret as painting with fabric, as the multitude of her astutely arranged fragments undergo a unification of sorts, converging and coalescing to create dramatic flushes of color and composition.
ARTIST BIO
Neama El Sanhoury's upbringing in what she describes as a cultured household is primarily what cultivated her profound appreciation and commitment to rectifying Egypt’s wealth of historical and civilizational customs and heritage. Naturally, El Sanhoury pursued her studies in a similar direction, specifically in applied arts as well as Egyptology, archaeology and art therapy in France, before embarking on her career in art. El Sanhoury has also previously worked as an art lecturer, an interior designer as well as in the tourism sector. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group settings since 1995, both locally and internationally in France, Morocco and Spain, and her work has garnered numerous awards and accolades from different institutions at home and abroad.
The inspirational thrust behind El Sanhoury’s captivatingly unique ‘textile painting’ stems from her dearly held childhood memories, which gave birth to her innate fixation on restoring into our collective conscience the memories of the ancient civilizations that inspire her work. El Sanhoury seeks to remedy the shared threads of Egyptian heritage, the Pharaonic, Coptic and Islamic. She succeeds at presenting this to the current generation with an unmistakable contemporary appeal as something to educate, treasure and venerate. Her ‘textile paintings’ are replete with symbols and motifs drawn from Egypt’s diverse civilizational history. These include hieroglyphs inscribed on sarcophagi, traditional ornate Coptic textiles, and the familiar wooden Islamic mashrabiya. Also, the more contemporary cultural markers such as the small copper gas burners and earthenware water pots, ubiquitous features in Egyptian homes and streets, as well as the typical and symbolic animals that were an eternal part of Egypt’s daily life, such as the humble donkey, chicken, ox and duck.
Perhaps the most striking quality of El Sanhoury’s canvases are that at first glance and from afar they resemble actual paintings. Her exceptional medium is not instantly recognizable, which is partly her aim when creating her art, to establish the impression of “painting with fabric” as she says. Her art features a ceaseless element of organic movement that only the effect of fabric could portray; she compliments this with a palette that is entirely harmonious yet stimulating in terms of its subdued, natural and earthy tones.

Sublime 1179 - Mixed Media Original Abstract Landscape Artwork
By Tae Ho Kang
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Inspired by the artists of the Modern Art era, including Post-Impressionist Paul Cezanne, Kang visualizes the modern-day search for identity in an age where information and images permeate every aspect of contemporary life. His architectural urban scenes are flattened, with everything pressed against the surface of the artwork. At times, multiple views of the same houses are visible, trees and bushes are vaguely alluded to, and the color palette finds a hectic balance. Just as a city operates in a balance of chaos and the sublime, so do the artworks of Kang.
The Sublime is a euphoria that affects the deep recesses of consciousness. As is the experience of the sublime, Kang's work is largely abstract. This colorful horizontal artwork is 42 inches high by 30 inches wide. The sides of this textured, original mixed-media artwork are finished as a continuation of the front and it does not require framing. It is hand-signed and dated by the artist on the front and back. It is wired and ready to hang. Free local Los Angeles area delivery. Affordable U.S. and worldwide shipping. Provenance: Artspace Warehouse. A certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery is included.
Tae Ho Kang was born in Seoul, Korea in 1945. He studied at the College of Arts of Hongik University in Seoul, South Korea. He later moved to California to study Fine Art at California State University, where he graduated in 1980. Since then, his artworks have focused on the never-ending quest for home and belonging in a dense urban landscape.
About his mixed media artworks, he remarks: “One day, when I was traveling, I was impressed by the beautiful scenery of the city under the sky, with many straight lines, curved lines, and harmonies of different colors, which seemed to be a magnificent orchestral performance. The beauty of this urban landscape gave me a deep impression and great change began to take place in my work. I wanted to be a molecule in this huge space. I have to find a house of my heart to be a molecule. Where is the house I live in? What is my identity? This question has begun to arise. I am on a long journey to find my own house.”
His mixed media collage artworks have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions as well as international art fairs throughout the US and in Korea. Kang's work has also been featured in Television and Film productions, including Criminal Minds, NCIS Los Angeles, Unforgettable, The Mindy Project, The Great Indoors, and American Housewife. His artworks have been exhibited and acquired by private collectors around the world.

Qana, Palestine Large Mixed Media Conceptual Abstract Painting
By Dennis Balk
Located in Surfside, FL
From his show Hashish at Michael Steinberg Gallery (bearing their label verso)
Reviewed by Roberta Smith in the New York Times.
Abstract Expressionism meets graffiti photography. Cy Twombly in cyberspace. Existential physics. The trajectories of car bombs. These phrases came to mind at the show of Dennis Balk's new work, made during the last three years while he lived in Bahrain and traveled primarily in the Middle East.
The show is dominated by black-on-white gestural drawings on canvas from Mr. Balk's Faith Thumbnail series. Full of graphic and even painterly nuance, they turn out to have been made completely on the computer. In a smaller room, the Exhausted and Ideographic series features gaudy, vertiginous digital mixes of colorful photographs.
Originally a performance artist, he became known in the art world in the early 1990s for improvisational diagrams that brought different historical narratives into collision. One work in his solo debut at American Fine Arts in SoHo in 1992 charted the lives of Ho Chi Minh and Abraham Lincoln -- both fathers of their countries in different ways -- across white paper napkins. His 2003 exhibition at that gallery was titled ''Particles + Waves With Plausibility,'' as is a recent book of his work.
Dennis Balk is an educator, visual artist, writer, media designer and playwright based primarily in New York. Balk has an MFA Degree from California Institute of the Arts. Throughout the 90s and 00s he was an Art Director and media designer for television, outdoor, print and emerging tech and social/ media at; Arnell/ Bickford Associates, Frankfurt Gipps Balkind, Foote Cone & Belding and McCann Erickson, New York. At Amster Yard, the conceptual agency within McCann Worldwide, Balk was involved in concepting high-profile campaigns that ran both domestically and internationally. As an interactive and exhibition designer, Balk has designed significant exhibition work for; Princeton University (The Firestone Library), The National Building Museum (Washington DC), The Jewish Museum (New York) and The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (Washington DC) in conjunction with the offices of James Ingo Freed. Balk has taught and lectured at a variety of Universities, most recently; UCLA in the Department of New Genres, the Università IUAV di Venezia, Yale University, Otis College of Art and Design- Public Practice MFA and as Coordinator of the Department of Fine Arts/ Computer Graphics at the New York Institute of Technology, Bahrain Campus. Since the late 80s his art work has addressed, in multiple formats (including several productions of his plays), the conditions of narrative and the narrative aspects of historicizing the present. His work has been exhibited internationally and reviewed extensively including; Artforum, Filosofia e Questioni Pubbliche, Bookforum, Art in America, Paper Magazine and The New York Times. While in New York, his primary gallery representation was with the seminal gallery, American Fine Arts. In February 2009, INOVA at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee presented the early work survey titled, “Dennis Balk - Early Work 1890-2090”. His recent publications include; “Dennis Balk/1890-2090” (2010-channel 171), “Dennis Balk The Arabian Gulf” (2010-channel 171), “ash” (2009-channel 171), “Colin de Land, American Fine Arts” (2008-powerhouse books), and “particles + waves with plausibility” (2006-powerhouse books).
