About the Item

medium: hand-cut road map The artist says of the inspiration in her latest work . . . Moving to Washington, DC in 2016 changed me. The unraveling of this country's leadership elicited a strong, visceral reaction, and I spent the last year coming into consciousness. The work in this exhibition is a small act and the beginning of my journey to find my voice. Navigating through life as a woman, I have faced a myriad of challenges—most of which I had accepted as the norm and was never courageous enough to protest. I have been harassed on the street by strangers. I have seen my hardworking friends with children openly and honestly struggle to find the necessary support for both work and life balance. I have faced constant judgment for being childless and unmarried in my 30s. I encountered income inequality in the workplace. While these may seem like mild and ordinary obstacles, they are systemic problems. It is easy to feel helpless and wonder what one individual can do. After being silent for a lifetime, I now challenge myself to have a voice. Each small voice builds the resistance and strengthens the sound. Nikki Rosato earned her MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 2013. Prior to studying at SMFA, She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art and Art History from the University of Pittsburgh. Rosato’s work has received multiple awards, including a 2014 Blanche E. Colman Award, and she has exhibited both nationally and internationally. In 2017 her work was included in Deep Cuts: Contemporary Paper Cutting at the Currier Museum of Art in New Hampshire, and in Temporal Gestalt at Clemson University’s Lee Galley in South Carolina. In 2016, Rosato had a solo exhibition, titled Inbound, at Grounds for Sculpture in New Jersey. Her work has been featured in numerous publications, including The Seattle Times, The Boston Globe, Canadian Geographic, Art New England Magazine and Hi-Fructose New Contemporary Art Magazine.

Sake of the Song
By Robert Mars
Located in Napa, CA
Robert Mars’ graphic compositions and rich colors provide an ideal medium in which to explore his fascination with the Golden Age of American popular culture and the icons of the 1950’s and 60’s. Drawing inspiration from the near-mythical fame that surrounded celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe or Audrey Hepburn before the instant and all-encompassing presence of the internet, Mars’ daring approach creates paintings with a nostalgic yet innovative vintage quality. Mars begins by defining borders and background planes of color with sheets of brown paper and then proceeds to layer paint and vintage paper ephemera. He selectively sands segments of the layers, allowing specific portions of the underpainting to shine through, creating the sensation that the viewer is getting glimpses through a window into the Golden Age of America. By incorporating actual pieces of print from the eras he so adores and sealing it all under shining, impenetrable resin, Mars’s artworks transform into physical remembrances of a period in America’s past so loved and idolized, yet will forever remain trapped in history. A graduate of Parsons School of Design in New York, his artwork was selected for the Absolut Vodka Blank campaign alongside Damien Hirst, and his largest sized piece to date was acquired by Philip Morris/Altria for their corporate headquarters in Virginia. In 2015 Mars was chosen for the cover of Neiman Marcus’ May Book, while CocaCola purchased several existing works and ordered commissions for a world tour celebrating the 100-year anniversary of their trademark bottle shape, in which his artwork was spotlighted. Mars is a featured artist for a custom high end wallpaper and tile series...
