Olan Quattro's subtle and sophisticated works center on female protagonists. These characters engage in activities and adventures – whether they’re sailing, gardening, or traversing a fox-filled forest – without ever losing their sense of poise and elegance. Each work is layered with paper, gouache, and acrylic paint in an almost invisible collage. Within each image are quirky, witty, and technical details that reveal a complex pictograph of form and color.
Artist Statement:
As a mixed media artist, I am interested in memory, place and mythological folklore. My work is deeply rooted in art history's glorified depiction of the natural world from the Impressionists to the Hudson River School. My current work explores human isolation and environmental change. In an increasingly visual world, we pay attention to pictorial cues and messaging. It can be interesting to redefine the cue, to transform the message. I’m interested in how history and memory can be curated and redefined.
