About the Item

We are delighted to present this enchanting winter landscape by the Sundsvall-born artist Oscar Lycke. Executed in 1911, Motif from Ljusdal captures the serene beauty of a snow-covered forest with extraordinary delicacy and rhythm. The artwork is rendered in ink, chalk, and possibly watercolor, giving it a soft luminosity that evokes the quiet magic of a Nordic winter. The scene bears a striking resemblance to the work of Gustaf Fjæstad, with whom Lycke was acquainted. In fact, Lycke exhibited alongside both Fjæstad and Richard Lindström in Helsingborg in 1917. Despite earlier discouragement from a drawing teacher who doubted his artistic potential, Lycke proved himself a highly skilled draftsman—this work stands as a testament to his remarkable talent. Oscar Lycke (1877–1927) was born and raised in Sundsvall. Encouraged by one of his early art teachers, he pursued an artistic career without formal training. At the age of 20, he moved to Stockholm and began supporting himself through his art—initially with difficulty, but eventually with success. Over time, Lycke exhibited in cities across Sweden, as well as internationally in Copenhagen and even New York. He frequently traveled in search of inspiration and lived in various parts of Sweden. For a time, he settled in Delsbo with his wife, who was from nearby Hudiksvall. During the war years of 1915–1918, he lived in Stockholm, spending summers in the coastal village of Räfsnäs. Later, he returned to Sundsvall, often summering in Bodacke, Liden—a region that provided countless motifs for his art. Although not considered part of the major artistic canon of his time, Lycke enjoyed considerable recognition during his life and was able to support his family through his painting. His work blends national romanticism with a grounded realism typical of Scandinavian turn-of-the-century landscape painting. A posthumous exhibition at Sundsvall Museum in 1977–78 reaffirmed his enduring legacy, especially as a painter of northern Sweden. Even decades after his death, many homes—particularly those of former northerners—still proudly display his evocative depictions of the Norrland landscape. Oscar Lycke died in 1927 at the age of just 50, after a period of illness and near-blindness. This drawing from 1911 remains one of his finest, and a quietly powerful homage to the beauty of the Swedish winter. mixed media on paper Ink, chalk and likely watercolor signed and dated Osc Lycke 1911 unframed 23 x 30.5 framed 33.5 x 41  hand-made walnut frame from Stockholms Förgyllning och Bildhuggeri.  Provenance: Acquired directly from Katarina Gunnarsson, who inherited the painting from her mother, Barbro, the daughter of the artist.

A Winter Landscape by Swedish Artist Rikard Lindström
Located in Stockholm, SE
Depicting a winter wonderland, this piece mesmerizes the viewer with its turquoise sky - a bold and unique choice that draws the eyes upwards. But the narrative is more profound. Set against this sky is a distant, rugged stone hill, standing as a testament to the timeless beauty of nature. A few trees benethe the hill, gracefully blanketed with snow. The snow itself is no ordinary white, but a mix of pink and blue shimmers, giving the piece a more interesting quality. More intriguing are the tracks left in the snow. Whose might they be? An animal, perhaps? Or did the artist himself tread this frozen landscape, leaving behind a subtle signature? Such is the mystery of Lindström's work. Rikard Magnus Lindström (1882-1943) was not just a painter but a storyteller, deeply rooted in his Swedish heritage. He's best known for his paintings of archipelago scenes, where the tranquil and tempestuous moods of the sea often play central characters. Born in Stockholm, Lindström's journey into the art world began at the Konstakademien in Stockholm, and his passion took him to Copenhagen and Paris. Throughout his life, Lindström's restless spirit saw him wander, capturing the diverse landscapes of Stockholm's archipelago, Västkusten, Åland, and notably, Lofoten. His affinity for portraying the vast expanse of the sea, often with sailing vessels in the backdrop, is legendary. Lindström's colors were described as "powerful yet harmonious," and this piece is no exception. The juxtaposition of the turquoise sky with the shimmering snow showcases his masterful play with colors. A member of the younger generation of the Konstnärsförbundet, Lindström was greatly influenced by the older members, particularly by Karl Nordström's national-romantic paintings. Besides painting, Lindström had a flair for writing and was a popular contributor to Dagens Nyheter, often penning articles and notes in Morgonbris. However, beneath the vivacious, nature-loving exterior was a man of depth and complexity, as his ex-wife, Martha Rydell-Lindström, has depicted in her book. He was a lover of life, but his nature held layers of vulnerability and tenderness. Today, this winter landscape stands as a tribute not just to Lindström's artistic genius but to the very essence of the man himself. Embrace the opportunity to own a piece of Swedish art history, painted by an artist whose legacy continues to inspire. Rikard Lindströms paintings...

Arthur Percy – Winter Landscape with Snow-Covered Trees and River
Located in Stockholm, SE
This intimate oil painting presents a stylized winter landscape rendered in soft pastel tones. Snow-covered trees stand in tranquil silence along the banks of a frozen river, their forms reflected faintly in the ice. In the foreground, a small wooden boat lies moored at the river’s edge, contributing to the scene’s serene, contemplative mood. Percy’s delicate handling of light and color – a pale sunlit sky against subtle blues and violets of snow imbues the work with a poetic calm. The atmosphere and decorative simplification of the composition are strongly reminiscent of Gustaf Fjaestad’s celebrated Nordic winter scenes, capturing what contemporaries described as the silent, majestic beauty of Swedish winters with an almost mystical tranquility. In its quiet harmony and refined palette, the painting echoes Fjaestad’s approach to portraying winter “ruled by a pure and quiet spirit,” while remaining distinctly Percy’s own vision of nature’s repose. Arthur Percy was a Swedish painter and designer whose artistic development bridged academic training and modernist influences. He studied at the Konstnärsförbundets (Artists’ Association) school in Stockholm under prominent artists Richard Bergh and Eugène Jansson...
