About the Item
Phillip Sage is a master printmaker and artist whose work has been sought after by galleries and collectors of fine art from around the world for the last four decades. Born in Manchester, NH, he became an entrepreneur at the age of 8. His formal education includes a BA in Economics and Business Administration from St. Anselm’s College as well as a BFA from Cooper Union in Graphic Design. At Cooper Union he studied under his mentor, Charles Klabunde, as well as photography with Michael A. Vaccaro. He completed his military obligation by becoming an officer in the US Coast Guard stationed in New Orleans. During this time he came to know and love the beauty of southern living and its gracious people. In 1971 he began his career as a printmaker and painter. Southern Louisiana has been his home and artistic inspiration throughout his prominent career. Mr. Sage works exclusively with copper plates using an antique English press. His limited edition prints are printed on the finest paper with the effort done entirely by hand in the tradition of master intaglio printmakers. His artwork richly portrays the traditions of the South and the history of New Orleans. His etchings, when viewed by native and tourist alike invoke a feeling of romantic nostalgia. His extraordinary talent and determination has recently brought him a Peoples Health Champion’s Award as an individual over the age of 65 who has made a notable achievement in art conservation, specifically, removing mold from fine art etchings printed on even the most fragile types of paper. While not riding an Arabian horse or playing polo, Mr. Sage remains active in the art world. He donates his artwork for many charitable causes and participates in group exhibitions and solo-shows thus enabling him to meet his collectors. He is represented by numerous galleries in the South, continues his work in conservation and occasionally takes commissions for paintings in oil or watercolor.

Artist's Statement: "This painting harkens back to a series called "Gridish" that I created over the past couple of years, comprising similar rectangular shapes with complex surfaces incorporating tar, house paint, enamel safety paint and other materials. Here, though, the forms are isolated in negative space rather than stacked in a grid, which gives them a more iconic quality."
“Lyman’s work evolves restlessly, with the common elements generally being deft and unusual color choices that balance assonance and dissonance, and vestiges of the hand and facture purposely left in the paintings. The negative space is often so meticulously worked that it’s almost as if the objects – usually simple shapes – are there as much to complement the background as vice versa. Despite the often bold colors there is an elegance about his paintings that prevents them from being either loud or decorative. "
Artbeit Zeitschrift
“His paintings are a refreshing departure from the current abstract art world’s seemingly endless parade of fields of color with scribbles providing form, a style that is easily mimicked and has become a sort of “safe,” accessible go-to. There are confident decisions in these paintings appearing as commitments of strongly delineated forms and unexpected collisions of color that give the work a visceral, confident and playful soul, increasingly missing from contemporary expressionist abstraction. They are the paintings of a real painter rather than a decorative artist.”

Winged David (Bronze), ex. Daniel Glaser Estate (New Orleans)
By Michelangelo
Located in New Orleans, LA
A tabletop-sized solid bronze casting of Michelangelo's "Winged David", on a solid marble base. You can see his giant-killer sling "slung" over his shoulder. Fine detail. This came out of a collection of neoclassical grand tour souvenirs, owned by collector Daniel Glaser of New Orleans, Louisiana (from his estate). Back in the day, wealthy travelers in Europe often purchased sculptures and other mementos of the sites they visited. We have several other pieces from this collection in addition to this, including "Discobolus" and a fine gladiator with lance. Proudly presented by Guy Lyman Fine Art...
