About the Item
"Seahorse Garden" is surprisingly hard edged and whimsical at once. It is part of my "wUNDERsea" series.
The work aims to bring together the childhood wonder of visits to the aquarium; gazing at the fantastical anatomy of seahorses through colorful coral filled tanks.
The art is a mix of acrylic paint and intricately hand- cut and layered colored paper on a painted wood panel (with a 2 inch cradle.) Each paper form is cut with an x-acto knife.
In this series I aim to create works that resonate with the majesty of the ocean, it's delicate and unusual creatures and the fragility of its ecosystem.
It can be framed inside a shadow box which will enhance the feel of peering into a magical fish tank.

Philomena Marano
Philomena was raised in Brooklyn, just a stone’s throw from America’s most famous amusement park, Coney Island. She is most known for cut paper collage and limited edition prints in her acclaimed collection, “American-Dream-Land” in which she depicts both personal and universal themes in the rides, signs and attractions of her childhood playground. In 2017 , a move to Florida shifted her attention to the circus thrill shows of Sarasota. The precision, exhilaration and wonder embedded in the spectacle of these performances were a definite reminder of the fun and danger of the wondrous mechanical constructions in Coney Island; a continuity of earlier sensibilities. She acquired and honed her cut paper skills while working as an assistant to preeminent artist Robert Indiana in his New York studio on a prodigious cut paper project rendering set and costume designs for “The Mother of Us All”, Santa Fe Opera. In 2020, she was invited to give artist talks at the MFA St. Pete’s, FL. on her experiences working on the project in an exhibition titled: Art of the Stage: Picasso to Hockney where many of Indiana’s stage designs from “Mother” were displayed. Marano is co-founder of the Coney Island Hysterical Society, earned a BFA from Pratt Institute , and has been included in numerous galleries including Tabla Rasa Gallery, Brooklyn ,NY, ACA Gallery, NY, New York, Deutsche Bank, NY, New York, The DeLand Museum of Art, FL., Ringling College of Art & Design, Sarasota, FL., and the Art Center Sarasota.
Her work is featured in Charles Denson’s book, “Coney Island, Lost and Found,”
Ten Speed Press, 2002, SRQ magazine, 2021 , Luxe Interior + Design, 2021, Between 2Two Shores, a UK based Literary & Art publication, 2021, among others
and is in many private and corporate collections including the Brooklyn Museum.

Ann Parkin’s current work is an exploration of new possibilities in technique and materials, as well as the expression of a new imagery for art jewelry.
Historically, art and particularly craft, have been vehicles for the symbols, images and visual metaphors of society’s current view of its world and the “nature” of which it finds itself a part. Discoveries and techniques at the leading edge of science have given us astounding views of new levels of nature and reality and have provided opportunities for the development of a new set of imagery and symbols for our time. Parkin’s work has been inspired by the vast visual potential of such scientific areas as electron microscopy, nuclear imaging, “Chaos” physics, and particularly subatomic particle physics.
The graphic imagery of Parkin’s current work is not, in the traditional sense, abstract but rather is a representational view of nature that we are among the first generations to see. The images of the Particle Shower series are based upon the visual records of subatomic particle physics, which show the tracks left by subatomic particles as they pass through the bubble and cloud chambers once used by nuclear physicists.
Parkin reflects that, “It has been said that Science is the Religion of the modern age. If that is even in part true, then it points the way to an exciting new approach to ornamentation and imagery that goes beyond the commonly observable surface reality to re-establish the fundamental role of art/craft - the articulation and expression of underlying patterns of the natural order as an integral aspect of our created personal environment.”
Born in Toronto, Canada in 1956, Ann Parkin received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from New York University in 1978 and a Gemological Diploma from the Gemological Association of Great Britain in 1987. She studied metalwork, jewelry and enameling at the 92nd Street Y in New York City with renowned jewelry artists Robert Ebendorf, Rebekah Laskin, Charles Lewton-Brain and John Cogswell.
Parkin’s work has appeared in group exhibitions, and as a featured artist, at Aaron Faber Gallery, NYC; Oms Gallery, NJ; Objects of Desire, Louisville, KY; Society of Arts and Crafts, Boston, MA; Newport Harbor Art Museum, Newport Beach, CA; New Jersey Designer Craftsmen Gallery, New Brunswick, NJ; Greater Denton Arts Council, Denton, TX; Artist-Craftsmen of New York, NYC; Crafts National 26, Penn State University, PA; The Farrell Collection, Washington, DC; Contemporary Crafts Gallery, Portland, OR; Views Gallery, Manayunk, PA; Sculpture to Wear, Los Angeles, CA; Craft Students League, NYC; Joan Michlin...
