"Fils I Colors DCII" Contemporary Abstract Embroidered Mixed Media on Canvas

About the Item

"Fils I Colors DCII" is a framed mixed media work on canvas by Raul de la Torre, with vertical stripes of dripping paint in bright colors and embroidered organic shapes. De la Torre's signature technique of painstakingly hand-stitched organic forms in meticulously matched colors adds texture and delight to each of his pieces. This piece is finished in a silver floater frame with subtle beveling and a whitewashed woodgrain effect on the frame's interior and sides. Pricing includes the pictured frame. Unframed dimensions are 40 x 40 inches. Spanish artist Raul De La Torre creates vibrant abstract mixed media artworks that focus primarily on the color and the material. "Many painters create texture upon their canvases by building layer upon layer of paint; with each layer comes a greater sense of history and dimension within the work. Others using thickening agents to almost sculpt their paint, spreading it thickly upon their work’s surface for a subtle 3D effect. I have chosen a unique route to enrich my acrylic paintings with texture: embroidery. I first choose the colors I want to incorporate in the palette of the work I’m about to embark upon. To me, the colors represent people, moments or feelings. I paint with acrylic in various blocks of color interacting with one another, evolving a pattern upon the canvas. Sometimes I contain the paint within a clean border, other times I let the blocks of color drip down the canvas or paper. Next, I begin the process of embroidery. I make horizontal cuts on the canvas or paper and covers these open areas using cotton thread. This process of embroidering on canvas or paper adds both intrigue and a sense of depth to each unique work. My most recent body of works reflects a series of poems by a well known poet from Catalonia, my home country. An homage to both the poet and the creative process, my technique of embroidery is heartfelt exploration. Just as a poet builds words to form metaphor or meaning, I build texture through embroidery to form depth and character." FILS I COLORS "I first began to make cuts with a razor 15 years ago, shortly after reading an interview with Catalan artist, Joan Miro. In it, he said, 'I want to assassinate painting.' That started the process, and from there I created a series of works on canvas that involved large cuts filled with materials such as cardboard, old-t-shirts and paper. Six years ago, I decided to explore the combination of color and destruction of the working surface, and that was the beginning of 'THREADS AND COLORS – FILS I COLORS.'" "In FILS I COLORS, I always start by working with paint, making cuts on the paper or canvas, and then filling those gaps by embroidering with cotton thread. This adds texture to the work, and is an attempt to find life and movement and to create a more dynamic surface. The embroidery is meant to represent those experiences as a part of our DNA. It is also essential that the different combinations of colors represent emotions and interpretations for each individual interacting with the works." "I like to make people think. For the most part, people are hooked all day to a screen that is telling them what to do, what to watch, what to buy, etc. I want to make them think, feel, talk. For me, each work of the series represents many things: moods, people, moments, life experiences. I can remember the moment each was made and why I chose the particular colors I did. You have to feel what it represents for you."
