Reginald Wilson
Modernist Collage

About the Item

Reginald Wilson was born in 1909 in the small town of Butler, Ohio. Determined from boyhood to be an artist, he arrived at the Art Students League of New York when he was twenty. He studied with John Stuart Currie, among others, meanwhile making a living with odd jobs like that of office boy or night watchman. He was an easel painter in the Federal Art Project and served for three years as an airplane mechanic in the US Army Air Force during World War II. He and the artist Carolyn Haeberlin were married in 1942, moving in 1945 to where they made their home in a 200-year-old farmhouse. Wilson’s paintings and works in other media were exhibited widely beginning in the 1940’s, in New York City and in major museums and universities across the country. In Woodstock he showed at a number of galleries including that of the Woodstock Artists Association where he won the 1973 Sally Jacobs-Phoebe Towbin Award. His mid-Twentieth century contemporaries included Karl Fortess, Doris Lee, Eugene Ludins and Wilson's wife, Carolyn. Wilson's subjects range from the familiar like a kitchen chair, a still life or the windo of a shoe-repair shop to the idyllic, like fishing boats and the sea, Mexican villages and fine portraits. His carefully composed and subtly colored "geometric-contructivist" acrylic paintings seem deceptively simple at firt glance. Wilson's work exudes optimism and love of life. Profession: Painter, portrait painter Studied: Chicago; Cleveland, OH; ASL, 1929 (he was friends with Arnold Blanch, who introduced him to Woodstock in 1939) Exhibited: Meteropolitan Museum of Art, The Whitney Museum, The Art Institute of Chicago, Brooklyn Museum, the Pennsylvania Academy, WMAA; AIC; BM; PAFA Ann., 1949; Woodstock AA Gallery; Ganso, Perls & Ferargil galleries, NYC; Twenty Years of Painting, 1965-85, Woodstock, NY (together with his wife); Woodstock School of Art, 1998 (retrospective). Awards: Woodstock Fnd. Award, 1952; Sallie Jacobs Award, 1973 Member: Woodstock AA (board directors) Comments: WPA artist. Married to painter Carolyn Haeberlin (see entry) in 1942, shortly after he was drafted into the U.S. Air Force. After WWII, they settled in Woodstock, NY, where he painted portraits, mostly of his family, and everyday objects and scenes in a geometric-constructivist style.

  • Ternion III
    By Richard Hutter

found paper collage, acrylic & charcoal on art paper From the artists statement: Floral still life has been the primary theme in my work since 1993. Instead of a representational approach, however, I prefer an abstracted, "architectonic" view of my subject. I paint on constructions made of found wood and panels made of new wood (usually birch), sometimes using techniques borrowed from printmaking. I also create works on paper, including self-published prints. I create imagery by drawing with architects' tools (such as a french curve) and by collaging found elements from old books, magazines, postcards, and the like. I frequently use images from early 20th century books on mechanical drawing and engineering (a personal connection to my late father, about stories of paths not taken.) Formal concerns predominate over symbolic or emotional ones, informed by Minimalism and Pop, with a nod to Dada. Tactility and an obsession with surface are evident in all my work: encaustic-like waxy acrylic paint on found-wood constructions; sticky and mottled passages on lithographic monotypes; and matte and almost-porous-looking surfaces on found-paper collages. More recently I began using found diagrams and photos of gears...

  • The Eagle Flies On Friday
    By Francis X Pavy
    Located in Lafayette, LA
Entitled The Eagle Flies on Friday, this work on paper depicts a Bald eagle flying in the late afternoon on a Friday. The two guitars crossed in the upper left-hand corner and a French accordion hidden in the left bottom right corner give a celebratory feel to the image. A distant flock of purple swifts inhabit the right upper middle portion of the image. A purple indigo plant overlays the turquoise Spanish guar on the left. Undulating light blue lines depict water flowing overlay an emerging dark blue palmetto partially obscuring the accordion on the bottom right corner. A blue orb above the eagle symbolizes the New Blue moon signaling new beginnings. This is a unique multiple oil relief print on paper. Unique. because it's one of a kind. Although printmaking processes are used there are no multiples made. Only one. This work is made by printing with different relief blocks multiple times, brush painting, and airbrushing. The ink and paints used are oil-based. Because of the multiple printing techniques, the reverse contains notations in graphite pencil, and ink colors to be used on blocks. Also on the reverse, there is residual ink from the printing process. Signed and dated en verso ( on the Back). Writing on the back reads THe Eagle Flies on Friday (title) ©2014 Francis X Pavy...
