About the Item
The warm amber tones of this piece suggest decades hung amid the smoky ambience of a legendary 19th-century cabaret. Almost hiding among the torn bits of vintage French and English newspaper headlines and advertisements is the tiny image of a dapper black cat, instantly transporting the viewer to the fabled Montmartre bistro Le Chat Noir. Yet, further inspection in the lower right corner reveals a creation date of 1950 and the initials R.H. for Northern Californian Richard Hackett (1917-1988), whose work was exhibited at the University of Hawaii and the Art Center School in Oakland. Mysteries abound.
