Artist Rick "Marlowe" Schneider presents vintage imagery of a coastal town. He paints a red boat lodged by the shore, overlooking the sweeping view of beach houses. "The island breezes among the palm trees create a mood of having no worries in the world," says Rick. He captures the warm tropical vibe with radiant colors and dynamic integrations of layered dimensions.
About the Artist
Artist Rick "Marlowe" Schneider creates mixed-media collages, combining the use of handmade paper with a raised dimensional technique. "This process produces distinct shadows which make the imagery jump off the canvas," says Rick. His work is a contemporary nod to 1930s and 1940s graphic design. By bringing together bold color combinations and patterns with quirky typefaces, Rick's work embodies the fun and elegant movie posters of Hollywood's Golden Age. Inspiration for his narratives comes from his father who was a pulp fiction writer. His loft studio in Leland, North Carolina, houses his archive of pulp magazines and stories from the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. "My workspace is cluttered with canvases and handmade paper that I have imported from Thailand. It may be impossible to walk around but the atmosphere is perfect for creating."

"The beauty of the earth and the mystery of the universe converge," says Brit of this abstracted modernist landscape. "The three moons beg the question as to where this beautiful valley is to be found. I don't claim to know the answer, but I believe in its existence." Inspired by a summer trip, Melissa has been looking forward to combining one of her favorite birds, the meadowlark, with purple asters. She enjoyed creating the contrast between the loosely rendered flowers and the more detailed bird. Adding to the piece are lovely orange accents and a little iridescent blue.
About the Artist
Melissa is passionate about color. She finds it to be the most significant form of inspiration to paint. Speaking on influences in her work, Melissa says, “Sometimes it’s an idea that I can’t get out of my head, or a color that I just MUST paint!” She particularly enjoys painting leaves, and the changing colors of Oregon foliage are visible in her work. In 2001, Melissa began teaching art classes, which has allowed her to view her own artwork in a new way. “The information that flows in a class is awesome,” she says. Melissa is constantly learning from the students in her classes, and is more conscious of what it means to be an artistic role model.
