About the Item
Art Protis Wall Tapestry
Robert Freimark (1922 - 2010)
Bob Freimark was active/lived in Ohio, California, Michigan. Robert Freimark is known for abstract expressionist painting, figurative-Mexico, teaching.
Subject matter for which known: "I am an abstract-expressionist, but I am committed to the belief that all artists must thoroughly know and pursue the figure and the figurative genre, in the same sense that a pianist regularly practices the scale."
Freimark attended art classes at the Toledo Museum of Art. At that time the Toledo Museum of Art was the third most significant museum in the U.S. He was deeply involved in sports, particularly boxing and football. He won the Diamond Belt Tournament in Detroit and got to meet Joe Louis and Jack Dempsey. After the war Freimark attended the University of Toledo, and studied with Hal Lotterman and Harvey Littleton, plus an excellent faculty at the Toledo Museum of Art. He went on to gain a Masters in Fine Arts at Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he was tutored by Eliel Saarinen in architecture and Carl Milles in sculpture. Following Cranbrook, he returned to Toledo, where he lived near Israel Abramofsky, who had been one of the expatriates in Paris during the blooming of Modern art. Later he studied with Max Weber, from that same period.
His suite of serigraphs, "Fifty States," toured Europe in 1970-71 and includes one example of each of the U.S. fifty states. His outdoor painting classes led him to set up the Artist in Residence program for the National Parks, which he initiated at Yosemite in 1984. Freimarks travels abroad introduced him to Art Protis, the tapestry technique perfected in Communist Czechoslovakia, where I worked seasonally for 25 years, immersed in a technique that was very related to painting. Film-making occupied a good deal of his time at the turn of the century. In 2005 he had completed "El Dia Tarasco" in Mexico, "Arte Cubano" in Cuba, "Los Desaparecidos" in Argentina, and "Royal Chicano Air Force" in California. Known for Contemporary Art, 20th Century Art, Abstract Landscape, Tapestry and Wall Hanging, Painting, Textile Arts, Political art.
"I consider myself a painter. But to be a painter, you have to under-stand line, and drawing. Drawing leads directly into print-making. And finally there is sculpture, and architecture, to house the art." "I was motivated by the people before me, Matisse and Cezanne particularly, and eventually Willem De Kooning. I understood from those early masters that it is the province and discipline of an artist to utilize whatever media he confronts, or whatever exists around him, and particularly the media most pertinent to the subject at hand."

Art Protis was artistically developed by famous Czech artists Jiří Trnka and Antonín Kybal, Non woven tapestries by first preparing wool which comes in raw sheets dyed in different colors. The prepared wool is then cut to pieces and placed on top of one another like a collage. The finished layers were then pressed through a machine and stitched together on to a canvas. Federico Aguilar Alcuaz, French artist James Coignard, American Robert Freimark and Australian Erroll B. Davis Amongst many others.

Fiber Art Collage Israeli Modernist Vibrant Colorful Tapestry Wall Hanging Rug
By Smadar Livne
Located in Surfside, FL
Smadar Livne, an Israeli born artist, is currently living and creating in Owings Mills, Maryland. An award winning artist, she is recognized as one of today’s leading Judaica artists. Educated at Haifa University, Livne has degrees in art, literature, and architecture. She has continued her education of philosophy through Baltimore Hebrew University. Portraying scenes from her life and learning is what gives her work an edge. Livne’s works are vibrant and exciting, and express the joy that Livne sees in life. Not only are the works beautiful, but subtle messages are also painted into each piece, and require time for observation and reflection. Technique sets Livne apart from the rest. Using bold, bright colors and wide strokes, she adds other items in a layering technique. The eye catching result contains layers of paint, fabric, wool and other materials objects, and meaning. Following in the manner of Calman Shemi and before him Kopel Gurwin, Itche Mambush and Georges Goldstein...

Stendhal #2 Soft Tapestry wall hanging
By Calman Shemi
Located in Surfside, FL
this is a bright vibrant abstract wall hanging tapestry by Calman Shemi. I believe the material is wool with a linen backing but i am not positive. it can also be used as a floor rug.
Calman Shemi, sculptor and painter, was born in Argentina in 1939. A graduate of the School of Sculpture and Ceramics in Mendoza, he studied under the Italian-Argentinean sculptor Libero Badii whom he credits with putting him on the right path. “He taught me principals, not only related to sculpture, but human and philosophic principals. Shemi also carefully studied the work of such masters as Picasso, Caravaggio, Frank Stella and Matisse. “From each one of these great artists I learned something from observing them,” he says.
In 1961, at the age of 20, Shemi immigrated to Israel and joined Kibbutz Carmia of which he was a member for twenty years. There he worked in agriculture and also as a sculptor working with wood and clay. Several of his large-scale fiberglass and polyester projects are situated in public buildings. He was a student of German-Israeli sculptor Rudi Lehmann, a pioneer of the artistic movement known as “Canaanism.”
Canaanite art was an effort to create a direct relationship with the land, bypassing historic Jewish connotations—hence the land’s primordial name is used. Canaanite works, with an emphasis on the inter-action of simple shapes, bear a deliberate resemblance to the sculpture and ritual art of early civilizations of the Middle East prior to Judaism, always with an eye to the fusion of man and the land itself.
Though sculpture dominated his early years as an artist, in the mid ’70s Shemi developed the idea of the “soft painting” medium. Beginning with a color drawing done to scale, Shemi layers onto the drawing irregularly shaped pieces of variously textured and colored fabrics. Using a threadless 9,000-needle sewing machine, the fabrics are meshed to one another and to the background, resulting in vibrant carpet...
