About the Item

14 minute and 3 seconds four channel video installation, original soundtrack Edition 1/3 RUTH OWENS graduated in 2018 with an MFA from the University of New Orleans after leaving her medical practice of 25 years. She is represented by the Jonathan Ferrara Gallery, and belongs to the artist collective, “The Front,” both in New Orleans. Owens’ work is concerned with contributing to and preserving the black archive, and she uses personal super-8 film references in her painting and video art. Artist residencies include the Joan Mitchell Center, the Addison Gallery of American Art, the Vermont Studio Center, and the Studios at MASS MoCA. She is slotted to attend the International Studio and Curatorial Program in NY in 2023. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Ackland Art Museum at UNC-Chapel Hill, the Addison Gallery of American Art, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the Dale Center for the Study of War and Society, and 21c Museum. The artist says of her work… Black Delight, An Ecopoem, 2024, is a 4 channel immersive video installation that positions our Black subjecthood and the natural environment in the same vulnerable space. In a poetic display of resistance to extractive forces, human support found in a Black multigenerational dance party is aligned with evidence of nature’s support within our Gulf wetlands. Pathos evoking archival moments intertwined with contemporary house party dance scenes provide an ominous temporal reminder of how quickly loss of culture and ecosystem can occur. In Black Delight, An Ecopoem, Ruth Owens invites us to wade into the lush, layered narrative of Louisiana’s Barataria Bay, a place where fragile coastal ecosystems meet the joy and resilience of Black communal life. Against the backdrop of rapid land loss—25 square miles a year—and waterways burdened by pollution, Owens crafts a vibrant scene that is both celebration and lamentation. Her installation juxtaposes the quiet urgency of a threatened environment with the pulse of a sensual dance party. Dancers move in harmony with the tides, their bodies a testament to survival and joy in the face of extraction and colonization. The music, color, and movement spill into every corner of the space, revealing a divine ecosystem where every being plays a part. Owens draws from the Kongo cosmogram, a sacred symbol of the Bakongo religion, to anchor the installation’s spiritual resonance. The cosmogram’s circular design, divided by the Kalûnga River, represents the physical and spiritual worlds in constant motion. Here, the dancers are humble yet radiant participants in this cosmic flow, embodying unity and renewal.
