About the Item
Ethel Merman "Annie Get Your Gun" original Mid Century Broadway theatre drawing
Ethel Merman in the pre-Broadway tour of ANNIE GET YOUR GUN, 18 ½ x 22 inches by Sam Norkin. This drawing is signed, titled and dated 1946, Boston.
Sam Norkin was a Brooklyn born artist who specialized in theater caricatures for more than seven decades. His drawings of theater, opera, ballet and film celebrities appeared in Variety, Backstage, The Philadelphia Enquirer, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe and other publications.
During the 1940s, newspaper editors wanted to devote more space to new theatrical productions, but photo opportunities usually did not happen until a show opened. Norkin took advantage of the situation and gained access to rehearsals, performers, costume sketches, fittings and scenic designs, providing editors with illustrations prior to an opening.
From 1940 to 1956, his theatrical illustrations were a regular feature in the New York Herald Tribune. Then for the next 26 years, he covered the performing arts for the Daily News. Since 1940, Norkin has had more than 4000 drawings published.
This drawing is unframed. We have several more iconic works by the artist.

Ann Miller in Follies Broadway Musical Contemporary Drawing Illustration Eloise
Ann Miller in Stephen Sondheim's "Follies." The 1998 production, played at the Papermill Playhouse. Affixed to the back of the drawing is a brochure promoting the show. Mixed media on paper. Signed lower left. Inscribed lower right: "Ann Miller at 75 'I'm Still Here' in Stephen Sondheim's 'Follies' 1998." Framed. 17 x 12 in. (sight). 22 1/2 x 17 1/2 in. (frame)
'Tops in Taps' Ann Miller was still going strong at 75 years old when she made her last appearance in the musical, "Follies." She was one of M.G.M's most prolific dancers and considered by many to be the greatest female tap dancer of all time.
Hilary, a friend of many years, is still going strong at 96. We saw this production at the Papermill Playhouse. Years ago, I was a press agent working in Henry Luhrman's office where we represented "Sugar Babies" with Ann Miller and Mickey Rooney.

Original Edith Head 1940s Sketch Dorothy Lamour Paramount
Located in Palm Springs, CA
Unique and rare opportunity to own an original mixed medium costume sketch drawn by the famous costume designer Edith Head, at Paramount Studios. The drawing was done for Dorothy Lamour and is one of her earliest design sketches circa early 1940s. There are only a few known existing sketches actually drawn by Edith Head herself, and not by one of her sketch artists. The sketch for Lamour’s dress may have been done for the black and white period movie Dixie starring Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour. Unframed and in its original unaltered state.
