About the Item

Landscape artists have forayed into the realm of the fantastic. For example, Scooter Gilthorthian's landscapes are populated with fanciful creatures. In "Saturday Afternoon at Scooter Inlet," a mixed media work on paper from 2011, the artist places cut-out candy-colored figures in a photographed landscape. The juxtaposition of the naturalistic photographed landscape and the invented two-dimensional figures takes away any sense of the photograph as an index of reality. The fact that the landscapes are "readymade," that is, cut out from an unknown source and repurposed for the work, removes them even further from reality. And this defamiliarization seems to be the artist's intent. We are left to speculate about a possible narrative for the work. "Saturday Afternoon at Scooter Inlet" may suggest a similarity to Georges Seurat's "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of the Grande Jatte" of 1884 which shows people at leisure in a popular tourist locale outside of Paris. Glithorthian transforms this art historical reference, adding whimsy and humor. 5 1/4" x 7 3/8" art 8 3/4" x 11" paper 15 1/8" x 17 3/8" frame Scooter Glithorthian's latest invasion of creatures, who come to Earth from who knows where to bless, observe, hang out, or make playful mischief. These mixed media pieces are set in scenic landscapes that have been visited by these friendly creatures. Glithorthian was a part of the Flying Leap Art Space in Fairfield, IA until it closed in 2014.

'Scratch The Earth, Let The Telephone Ring' original assemblage by Joel Jaecks
By Joel Jaecks
Located in Milwaukee, WI
'Scratch The Earth, Let The Telephone Ring' is a rare early example of the small-scale assemblages that American artist Joel Jaeks began producing in the 1980s. As with all of his assemblages, the artwork is constructed inside an envelope-sized paper board box – then filled with what can only be called memories, ideas and fading dreams. 'Scratch The Earth, Let The Telephone Ring' is covered on the exterior and interior by splatters of blue and red paint, applied with the same vigor as the Abstract Expressionist canvases of Jackson Pollock. On the back, four squares cut from a screenprint of a winter landscape form a window to the themes on the inside: pasted on the back, a Victorian postcard...
