About the Item

Raccoons is one of the first forty animal-themed works Shi Jun created in collaboration with Taiwan’s Liang Yi Culture, and it perfectly showcases the artistry of “Hua Embroidery,” his signature fusion of painting and embroidery. Shi Jun paints a rugged oil-painted rock background with bold textures, setting off three raccoons whose soft fur seems almost touchable. Their layered coats look fluffy and full of life, as if they have just peeked out from their den. Skilled embroiderers used ultra-fine silk threads and needles, applying a range of traditional and innovative stitches to capture every glint of light across each strand of fur. Hua Embroidery unites high-quality British-imported fabric, oil painting, and delicate embroidery into a single work. The process demands complex hand-dyeing and meticulous needlework, and stitching over oil paint is especially challenging because the painted surface becomes thicker and harder. Raccoons exemplify how Hua Embroidery blends the rich color and depth of painting with the tactile detail of embroidery.
