About the Item

Shi Jun spent many years deep in the tropical rainforests of Xishuangbanna, Yunnan. To stay close to nature, he even bought a house in the area and went into the forest at dawn each day to observe and paint from life. Few artists have taken on the birds and plants of the rainforest, yet he used meticulous gongbi painting techniques to capture their vitality in Rainforest Symbol. With rich layers and the rare use of warm tropical hues, the painting gathers blooming orchids, resting birds, and ancient trees into a vibrant vision that seems to carry the forest’s damp fragrance. This work gains a unique depth through Hua Embroidery. In collaboration with Taiwan’s Liangyi Culture, Shi Jun combined richly dyed British-imported fabric with oil painting and silk thread. The base fabric, soft and delicate, reveals cloud-like shadings under the light. The silk threads are repeatedly hand-dyed and layered, then woven together with the refined brushwork to create an unprecedented embroidered painting. Many skilled embroiderers worked patiently for years, so the colors and light emerge in subtle gradations and quiet relief. The result preserves the essence of the original painting while adding delicate three-dimensional textures, allowing Rainforest Symbol to achieve striking visual and artisanal depth.
